BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis earned a pair of conference wins on the road on Wednesday, downing Webber International 8-1, followed by a 9-0 defeat of Warner. The Eagles are now 12-6 overall and are first in The Sun Conference race with a 5-0 record in league play.
Against Webber International, the Eagles lost just four games to sweep the doubles points. Singles play saw Joyce Chen blank Kammie Bilardello 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and
Caroline Nilsson scored the clincher with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Anna Culaba at the third spot.
Josefine Strom,
Sara Abraul and
Landyn Scudder each earned victories in their singles contests, but the Warriors managed to get a point back at No. 1 singles where Lauren Brink edged
Natasa Zoricic 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Against Warner, the Eagles dropped just one game in nine matches to walk away with the win. ERAU Head Coach
David Paschal made some changes from his accustomed line-up, but his student-athletes didn't miss a beat.
Doubles play saw two first-time pairings take the court for the Eagles as Chen partnered with Strom at No. 1 and Scudder teamed up with fellow freshman
Taylor McWilliams at No. 3.
Chen, Nilsson and Strom all registered straight-set shutouts in the top half of the line-up, while Abraul defeated Julie Valentine 6-0, 6-1 in her first match of the year at the No. 4 singles spot. With the team victory already decided, Scudder and McWilliams played eight-game pro sets in their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively and both freshmen tallied 8-0 decisions to seal the Eagle win.
The Eagles return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Mar. 30 when they host Lindenwood at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex.
