Men's Tennis Downs Warriors, Royals

BABSON PARK, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team completed a successful road trip on Wednesday, earning a pair of conference wins to improve to 13-3 on the year. The Eagles downed 18th-ranked Webber International 8-1 in the first game of the day and followed with a 9-0 defeat of Warner to solidify their hold on first place in The Sun Conference standings with a 4-0 league mark.

The Eagles easily swept through the doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, but the Webber International duo of Rafael Texeira and Tyler Heath put up a tough fight at No.2. In the end, Charlie Rice and Zander Woodford-Smith, playing their fifth doubles match together this season, managed to pull out a 9-8 (9-7) win to complete the Eagles' doubles sweep.

Shortly after Alexis Huegas' 6-1, 6-1 win over Phillipe Andermatt at No. 2 singles, Jan Hoekzema clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Texiera. The Warriors managed to avoid the shutout when Juuso Tapaneinen pulled out a three-setter over Francis at No. 3, but the Eagles closed out the match with three wins in the bottom half of the line-up that included an 8-1 win by Adrian Bayh who made his return to competitive tennis following a pre-season injury.

The Eagles' second match of the day saw Head Coach David Paschal make some adjustments to his line-up. After playing together for the majority of the 2009 campaign, Rice and Bayh teamed up for the first time this season to notch an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Akharis Sa-ardphandrai and Diego Barros. Luke Maricic and Woodford Smith also played in tandem for the first time in 2010 and topped Guillerme Ferreire and Tiago Olivera 8-2 at No. 2.

Sean de la Bastide and David Spennare were also successful in their dual match doubles debut, topping Francisco Castillo and Kevin Sokol 8-3.

Playing his first match at No. 4 singles, Maricic was off the court first following a 6-1, 6-0 win over Texeira. Rice, playing at the second spot, scored the clincher against Barros (6-1, 6-4) and Huegas bested Sa-ardphandrai 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot.

Bayh was tested in his in his second dual match appearance of the season as Ferreire took him to three sets before the ERAU sophomore pulled out the win (6-1, 4-6, 10-7).

Spennare and de la Bastide closed out the match with wins in their respective singles contests, playing the eight-game pro set format. Spennare defeated DelCastillo 8-3 and de la Bastide downed Sokol 8-2.

The Eagles' next match will be against 17th-ranked Lindenwood at 3:30 p.m. on Mar. 30.
