DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team recorded its fifth win against a ranked NAIA opponent this season with a 9-0 shutout of No. 17 Lindenwood, Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles improved their overall record to 14-3 on the year, while the Lions fall to 6-2.
The first doubles match off the court was at the No. 2 spot where
Adrian Bayh and
Alexis Huegas made quick work of Gauthier Schilling and Otavio Costa with an 8-1 win.
Charlie Rice and
Zander Woodford-Smith followed with an 8-4 defeat of Martin Capdeviole and Stephane DelSaglio. The 10th-ranked ERAU tandem of
Peter Francis and
Istvan Bolgar had a tough challenge against Caio Claudino and Renzo Lau, falling behind 6-3. The Eagle duo was able to recover and rattled off five straight games for an 8-6 victory, giving the Blue and Gold a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Rice was the first to notch a singles win for the Eagles as the 25th-ranked sophomore downed Stefan Hernandez 6-0, 6-1 at the third spot. Francis, ranked 20th in the latest ITA/NAIA national singles poll, scored the clincher with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Schilling, followed by Woodford-Smith who defeated Lau 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.
The singles match at the top spot was a closely contested battle between eighth-ranked Huegas and 11th-ranked Claudino. Each player held serve through the first seven games of the first set until Huegas pulled away to take the set 6-3. The second stanza saw both players deadlocked at 6-6, but Huegas easily won the tiebreaker 7-2 to take the match.
Bayh topped Costa 6-2, 6-0 and
David Spennare defeated Dal Soglio 6-2, 6-1 to close out the Eagles' scoring.
The Eagles' next match will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to West Palm Beach to close out conference play against Northwood.
