LAKELAND, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team closed out its regular season slate with a 7-2 loss to Florida Southern on the road on Saturday. The sixth-ranked Eagles are now 13-10, while the Lady Mocassins, ranked 14th in NCAA II improved to 16-2.
Florida Southern went up 2-1 after doubles as the 14th-ranked duo of Senka Softic and Agnese Rozite topped NAIA No. 3
Natasa Zoricic and
Yi Ching Chen 8-3 and Andrea Arguello and Veronika Kovacikova bested
Josefine Strom and
Landyn Scudder 8-1. The Eagles got a point back at the No. 3 doubles spot where
Caroline Nilsson and
Sara Abraul downed Nora Baertschi and Amanda Carns 8-3.
The Lady Mocassins quickly increased their lead to 4-1 courtesy of wins by Carns and Baertschi at the sixth and fifth positions, respectively. The clincher came at the No. 3 spot where Arguello held off Nilsson 6-2, 6-3 followed by eighth-ranked Softic's 6-1, 6-0 defeat of No. 10 Zoricic at the top spot.
The final two matches on the court went to three sets. Kovacikova dropped the first set 7-6 to Strom but recovered to win the match 6-3, 10-2 in the second and third sets. ERAU's Chen also fell behind after the first set but battled back to win improve her record to 23-6 with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Rozite at No. 2 singles.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to The Sun Conference tournament which will be hosted by Savannah College of Art & Design, Apr. 17-18. The Eagles are the tournament's No. 1 seed and will face fourth-seeded St. Thomas in the semifinal round at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
