SAVANNAH, Ga. – The top-seeded Embry-Riddle men's tennis team registered a 5-0 shutout of No. 4 Savannah College of Art and Design in the semifinal round of The Sun Conference tournament, Saturday at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Eagles advanced to play in the tournament championship match for the seventh year in a row, whil the Bees end their season at 3-9.
The Eagles swept through doubles as
Zander Woodford-Smith and
Charlie Rice blanked Jamie Spies and Rob Jennings 8-0 at the third doubles position,
Peter Francis and
Jan Hoekzema topped Dean Loock and Kaan Yaylali 8-2 and
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis downed Romeo Juhasz and Yusuku Kusuda 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Woodford-Smith was the first to finish his contest at No. 5 singles as he defeated Spies 6-0, 6-0. The clincher came at the No. 1 singles position where Hoekzema went up 5-0 over Kusuda before the SCAD No. 1 player was forced to retire.
The Eagles will face the winner of the Webber International/St. Thomas semifinal in the championship match at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
