DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered an loss 8-1 to Rollins in the Eagles' final home match of the season on Thursday. The Tars, ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division II national poll, improved their record to 14-5 on the year, while the fourth-ranked Eagles fell to 13-7.
Rollins took a 2-1 lead after winning matches at the second and third doubles positions. The first doubles match to finish was at the No. 3 spot where Stefania Tkach and Holly Fleming bested
Caroline Nilsson and Sara Abraúl 8-4. Roshni Luthra and Allie Steele topped
Josefine Strom and
Landyn Scudder, playing together for the first time the season, 8-5. At No. 1 doubles, ERAU's
Natasa Zoricic and
Yi Ching Chen went up 7-4, but the Rollins tandem of Margaret Junker and Kayli Ragsdale fought back to tie the match at 7-7. Zoricic and Chen held serve and then broke Junker and Ragsdale to put the Eagles on the board.
The Tars extended their advantage to 4-1 as Clarke Tatje downed
Taylor McWilliams 6-1, 6-1 and Margaret Junker topped Strom 6-0, 6-1. Ragsdale clinched the match for the Tars at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Abraúl.
The contest at No. 3 singles was a fierce battle between Nilsson and Tkach. Tkach took the first set 6-1, but Nilsson battled back to take the second 6-2. Tkach rebounded to take the match with a 10-4 win in the tie-breaker. At No. 2 singles, Zoricic suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Fleming.
The final match on the court was at the top singles spot where Chen and Luthra were involved in a three-set battle of their own. Luthra came back from a 5-4 deficit to hold off Chen in the first stanza, but the second belonged to the Embry-Riddle sophomore who evened the match with a 6-1 decision. In the end it was Luthra who was able to get by Chen, winning the third set 10-8.
The Eagles close out play in The Sun Conference at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to West Palm Beach to take on Northwood.
