No. 3 Eagles Down No.7 Florida Southern 7-2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its 16th win of the season with a 7-2 defeat of NCAA Division II No. 7 Florida Southern (12-5) on Thursday. Thursday's match was the last home contest in the collegiate careers of seniors Istvan Bolgar, Luke Maricic and Alex Perez and the senior trio was able to help the Eagles to a 16-4 overall record.

Bolgar and Peter Francis gave the Eagles a one-point lead with an 8-5 victory over Javier Castro and Nicolas Bigler at the No. 2 doubles position. The Eagle lead grew to 2-0 after Zander Woodford-Smith and Charlie Rice downed C.J. Johnson and Christian Lange 8-3, but the Moccasins got a point back when the 11th-ranked tandem on Michael Knoedler and Roma Schirmaier overcame a 5-4 deficit to top third-ranked Jan Hoekzema and Alexis Heugas 8-6.

Bolgar, a senior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., made his last match at the Crotty Tennis Complex a memorable one as he was the first to complete his singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Brian de Montfort at the fifth spot.

At No. 6 singles, Woodford-Smith jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Johnson battled his way back to make the score 5-4. Woodford-Smith was able to withstand the pressure and pulled out the 7-5 win in the first set before taking the match with an easy 6-1 win in the second.

The Moccasins made the score 4-2 when 15th-ranked Knoedler bested NAIA No. 5 Hoekzema 6-2, 6-4 at the top singles spot.

The remaining three matches all required three sets to determine the outcome. The first to finish was Francis at the fourth position in the line-up. Francis took the first set 6-4 over Lange, but dropped the second set 6-3. The third set went to the 19th-ranked Embry-Riddle sophomore who scored the clincher with a 6-4 win.

Eighth-ranked Heugas also took a one-set lead at No. 2 singles, easily downing NCAA II No. 33 Schirmaier 6-1, but like Francis, Heugas fell 6-2 in the second. Heugas was able to quell any momentum Schirmaier might have had and took the third set 6-4.

NAIA No. 25 Charlie Rice fell behind 6-3 in the first set, but rebounded to win his match at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles close out the regular season on the road on Tuesday when the travel to Orlando to take on NCAA Division I University of Central Florida.
