Eagles Shutout Nova Southeastern, 1-0

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The NAIA No. 14 Embry-Riddle Eagles took down NCAA II Nova Southeastern 1-0 on Sunday on the Sharks' home turf. ERAU used a goal from freshman Martine Olsen and a solid defensive effort from their backline as well as freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Grimes to preserve the victory. Embry-Riddle improves to 5-1 with their fifth straight win, while the Sharks fall to 1-3 overall.

The Eagles struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead on Olsen's eighth goal of the year in the 19th minute. Elina Johansson drew a foul just past the half line in NSU territory to set up the score. Valerie Obita received the free kick and moved down the right side of the field before crossing the ball right in front of the Shark goal where Olsen was waiting to tap the ball in for the Blue and Gold.

Embry-Riddle took the 1-0 lead into the half, outshooting the Sharks 12-5. Grimes made a pair of nice saves for the Eagles, and a team save by an ERAU defender kept the Sharks off the scoreboard in the first period. NSU's Chrissy Hy made three saves for Nova Southeastern in the first half.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle as both teams were able to lock down their nets to keep the score at 1-0 in ERAU's favor. 10 shots (6-4 NSU), seven saves (4-3 NSU) and 14 fouls (9-5 NSU) occured in the second period, but neither team could find the back of the goal.

The shutout was the Eagles' second of the season, the first coming at home in a non-conference win over Webber International. Grimes finished the game with five saves, moving her record to 4-1.

The Eagles will travel to Savannah, Ga. to partake in the SCAD Invitational this weekend where they will play Grace (5 p.m. on Friday) and Brenau (11 a.m. on Sunday). Following that, the Blue and Gold will open Sun Conference play when they travel to Lake Wales, Fla. and Babson Park, Fla. to play Warner (Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.) and Webber International (Sunday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.).
