DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball
team improved to 4-1 with a 3-1 victory over Wayland Baptist on Thursday in the
opening match of the 2010 ERAU Labor Day Tournament Sponsored by The National
Guard. Junior Abby Hall led the way with 25 kills and 16 digs, while Taylor Martin added 19 kills and nine digs.
Nina Kontrec anchored the Eagle defense with 42 digs, while setter
Adriana Vazquez recorded 56 assists.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead as Hall served eight consecutive points to
put ERAU up 13-4. The lead would
grow to 11 points when Hall's kill gave the Blue and Gold a 19-8 lead. Another Hall kill wrapped up the first
set in favor of the home team, 25-17.
ERAU took another early lead in set two, opening up a 16-9
advantage. After the Pioneers
rattled off three straight points, Embry-Riddle ran away with the set, scoring
nine of the next 11 points to take the set, 25-14.
After the extended break between sets two and three, Wayland
Baptist came out looking like a different team. The Pioneers gained a 13-7 lead in the third set and never
relinquished the lead. ERAU cut the
deficit to two (16-14) on a Hall kill, but WBU would win the next three points
and go on to take the set, 25-20.
Set four saw the closest action of the night, with four lead
changes and 10 ties. After Wayland
Baptist took an early 5-4 lead, the Eagles scored six straight points to open
up a five-point lead (10-5). The
Pioneers would respond, battling back to tie the score at 18, and taking a
19-18 lead on a Jennifer Wyatt kill.
WBU had two match points, but a service error and a Martin kill kept the
Eagles in the set. Finally, an
attack error by Wyatt gave Embry-Riddle a 27-25 win in the set, and a 3-1 win
in the match.
The Eagles continue play in the 2010 Labor Day Tournament Sponsored by The
National Guard tomorrow night when they take on Madonna University at 7 p.m.
