DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the second time in six matches
this season, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team knocked off a nationally-ranked
opponent, taking down No. 21 Madonna in three sets on Friday night at the ICI
Center. With the win, the Eagles improve
to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the 2010 ERAU Labor Day Tournament Sponsored by
The National Guard.
Abby Hall led the way with 15 kills and 11 digs, while
Taylor Martin added 10 kills and eight digs.
Libero Nina Kontrec recorded a match-high 13 digs. Adriana Vazquez led the ERAU offense to a
.299 hitting percentage, picking up 37 assists along the way.
The Eagles took an early lead in the first set and never
looked back. Embry-Riddle hit .355 as a
team, collecting 12 kills against just one hitting error in the set, en route
to a convincing 25-13 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The ERAU defense took over in set number two, holding the
Crusaders to a .064 hitting percentage.
The Eagles took the second set by a score of 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in
the match. In the third set, Madonna
University hung with the Eagles, but in the end ERAU was too strong, claiming a
narrow 25-23 win in set three, giving the Eagles a 3-0 sweep of the Crusaders.
With the sweep, Embry-Riddle is the first team to sweep
Madonna in a match since Lindenwood did it in October of 2008.
The Eagles close out the 2010 ERAU Labor Day Tournament

Center. First, ERAU will take on
Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m., before battling Oklahoma Baptist in the final
match of the tournament at 7 p.m.
