DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team notched its
11th consecutive win with a 93-63 defeat of Sun Conference opponent
Ave Maria, Wednesday night at Embry-Riddle's ICI Center.
The Blue and Gold were able to gain an early lead in the
first minutes of play and never look back, as they led by as many as 38 and
cruised to victory over the Gyrenes (8-4,0-2). The fourth-ranked Eagles are now
14-1 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.
The first seven minutes of the game seemed to be a back and
forth battle between the two teams, until a three-pointer from Glenn Dalcourt sparked
a 14-2 run, putting the the Eagles up 27-12 at the 10:31 mark.
The Eagle offense proved to be a powerful force once again
as another three-pointer, this time by Josh Seidel, ignited a 14-0 run with
three minutes left in the first frame. The dominant offense and pressure
defense from the Eagles caused the Gyrene offense to struggle, forcing them to
turn the ball over nine times.
After four straight points from the Gyrenes, the Eagles
headed into the locker room at half with a comfortable 47-20 lead.
A lay-up from Brandon Caputo sparked the Eagle offense at
the beginning of the second half as they rolled off nine unanswered points and
grabbed their largest lead of the game, 58-20.
The Eagles' dominated the entire second frame and closed out
the 30-point win over the Gyrenes, 93-63.
NAIA Division II National Player of the Week, David Butler,
led all scorers with 21 points, while Ray Graham and Jarod Leonard each had 18 points respectively.
Brett Rawlings added eight points, seven assists and two steals for the Eagles.
The Eagles outrebounded the Gyrenes 42-38, forced 16 AMU
turnovers and had 11 steals in the contest. In addition, eight different players connected on
three-point attempts throughout the game for the Eagles.
The Blue and Gold start a three-game conference road trip
when they head to Miami, Fla. on Saturday, Jan. 8 to face the Johnson
and Wales Wildcats.
