DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team notched its second win over a NCAA DII opponent on Sunday, registering a 9-0 shutout of Florida Tech at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The fifth-ranked Eagles improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Panthers, ranked 28th in NCAA DII, fell to 1-1.
Rocío Frej Vitallé and
Ekaterina Kamendova got the first point for the Eagles, downing Abigail Greif and Stephanie Dohner 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot. Kristina Márová and
Paola Montero quickly followed with an 8-0 shutout of Abbey Keister and Alexis Weinnig at No. 3, and the top-ranked duo of Josefine Ström and
Yi Ching Chen increased the lead to 3-0 with an 8-3 win over Katrina Huba and Monica Price at the top doubles spot.
Frej Vitallé was the first to finish her singles match, dispatching Price 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Chen scored the clincher for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Huba at No. 1 and she was quickly followed by Kamendova who topped Greif 6-0, 6-3 at the second position. Márová earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dohner at the fourth spot and Ström recorded her first shutout of the year with a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Keister at No. 5. Montero closed out the scoring for the Blue and Gold at the sixth singles position, besting Weinnig 6-1, 6-4.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Monday, February 7 when they travel to Lakeland to take on Southeastern. Monday's match will be the first conference fixture of the season for ERAU and is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
