DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched one of the biggest wins in program history, downing defending NAIA National Champion Auburn-Montgomery 7-2, Monday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win snapped a two-match losing skid and improved the third-ranked Eagles' overall record to 6-4 on the year. The Senators, ranked second in the country, now stand at 10-2.
The Eagles got their first point of the day when
Simon Felix and
Peter Francis teamed up for an 8-3 upset of 11th-ranked Bence Toth and Zino Jouini at No. 3 doubles. The Senators evened things up when the seventh-ranked duo of Boris Obama and Loic Didavi held off
Jan Hoekzema and
Chris Freeman at the top doubles spot. At No. 2 doubles,
Adrian Bayh partnered with
Patrick Besch for the first time this season and together, the duo bested Bruno Savi and Claudio Andrade 8-6 to give ERAU a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Felix was the first to finish his singles match, dispatching Jouini 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth position. No. 16 Savi pulled the Senators back within one with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 7 Hoekzema at the No. 2 spot. Besch increased the Eagle cushion to 4-2 after battling to a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over fourth-ranked Toth at No. 3 singles.
Down 4-1 to Obama in the first set, Freeman fought back to tie the score 6-6 and took the set 7-6 with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker. The second set was another battle that saw Freeman come from behind again and force an extra set to decide the outcome. Freeman quickly jumped ahead 5-2, but Obama fought his way back into contention and tied the score at 7-7. Freeman won the next point and stood ready to receive serve for the match, but a frustrated Obama was unable to control his emotions on the court resulting in a point penalty being assessed by the presiding official, which gave Freeman the win and clinched the match for the Blue and Gold.
Embry-Riddle's next match will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday against NAIA No. 6 Oklahoma Christian at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
