DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team scored its fourth win against a ranked NAIA opponent, downing No. 12 Southern Nazarene, Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles improved their 2011 overall record to 10-3 with their biggest win over SNU in program history. The Crimson Storm now stands at 4-3 on the year.
The Eagles wasted little time claiming an advantage, going up 3-0 after doubles.
Ekaterina Kamendova and
Rocío Frej Vitallé earned the first point of the match with an 8-2 defeat of Steffie Plaza and Viktoriya Lukinova and
Kristina Márová and
Paola Montero followed with an 8-4 win over Marina Shipilova and Hilary Galbreath. The top-ranked duo of
Yi Ching Chen and
Josefine Ström completed the sweep with an 8-3 defeat of 13th-ranked Olga Kozhevnikova and Deisi Bolivar at the top doubles spot.
The first three singles matches off the court saw the Eagles drop a combined total of three games as
Caroline Nilsson blanked Galbraith 6-0, 6-0, Kamendova topped Bolivar 6-0, 6-2 and Ström bested Lukinova 6-1, 6-0. Frej Vitallé (6-0, 6-2) earned a straight set win against Shipilova as did second-ranked Chen who topped No. 11 Kozhevnikova 6-1, 6-1.
The final match off the court was at the No. 4 singles spot and was the only one to go to three sets. Marova won the first set 6-2 and rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the second to secure the Eagle shutout with a 10-7 win in the third.
The Eagles' next match will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday when they host sixth-ranked Oklahoma Christian in a rematch of last season's national second round contest , which saw OCU oust the Eagles by a slim 5-4 margin.
