No. 10 @ERAUVolleyball Earns Split on Final Day of Boneyard Brawl

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle volleyball team bounced back from a 3-0 defeat (25-18, 25-21, 25-11) at the hands of the host Georgetown Tigers to take down Indiana Wesleyan in four sets (25-21, 25-14, 18-25, 25-23) to finish the Boneyard Brawl on a positive note. With the decisions, ERAU moved to 14-9 on the season, while Georgetown improved to 25-8 and IWU fell to 24-10.
 
Jennifer Beatty led the offense against GC with 12 kills to go along with eight digs while Morgan Shattuck added seven kills and five blocks. Hannah Gray collected a team-high 12 digs and Tamires Ferreira racked up a match-high 23 assists in addition to six digs and four blocks.
 
Caraline Maher's 13 kills led all players and she added four blocks (one solo) for the Tigers. Courtney Grafton picked up a match-high 13 digs while Lindsey Martindale (20 assists, 6 digs) and Stephanie Gurren (20 assists, 5 digs) ran the 6-2 offense for Georgetown.
 
The Blue and Gold used an early 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead in the first set and maintained the lead until near the midway point of the set. The Tigers rallied with a 6-1 run to regain the lead at 14-13. A kill by Shattuck made it 16-15 with Georgetown still leading, and that would prove to be as close as the Eagles would get for the rest of the set. The Tigers closed out the frame on a 9-3 run that included three kills and a service ace from Maher, taking the set, 25-18, to open a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Eagles got off to a good start in set two, scoring four of the first five points. After GC stormed back with an 8-1 run to take a 9-6 lead, the Blue and Gold scored three straight to tie it at nine. Maher came up big with two kills and a block to account for three straight points that pushed Georgetown in front, 13-10. Embry-Riddle fought back to tie things at 18 with a block from Shattuck and Ferreira. Maher put down a kill on the next point, sparking a 5-0 run for GC. The Eagles closed to within three points, but the Tigers held on for a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Georgetown jumped out to a 10-2 lead on the strength of nine straight points early in the third set. An 8-2 Tiger run built the lead to 18-5 and GC would go on to cruise to a 25-11 win, completing the 3-0 sweep.

Against Indiana Wesleyan, Jennifer Beatty and Taylor Ruiz each recorded double-doubles with a team-high 13 kills; Beatty added 10 digs while Ruiz chipped in with 11. Morgan Shattuck also reached double-digits with 10 kills and Emily Jacobson added nine with a .421 hitting percentage. Hannah Gray's 32 digs were a match-high while Tamires Ferreira registered a team-leading 46 assists to go along with 18 digs, five kills and two service aces.
 
Rae Brandes led IWU with a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs while Kristin Predajna tallied 14 kills. Kristine Egebrecht added 10 kills and a team-leading four blocks (one solo). Rebecca Brandes picked up a team-best 19 digs while Katey Holler tallied 12 digs and a match-high 49 assists.
 
Things didn't start well for Embry-Riddle as the Wildcats jumped out to a 7-2 lead early on. A Shattuck kill sparked a 6-0 run that saw ERAU take an 8-7 lead and a kill from Caitlyn Ballard put the Eagles ahead, 10-8. Jacobson scored a service ace to push the lead to 16-10 before IWU bounced back with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 18. Beatty stepped up with a kill to start a 5-0 spurt that put the Blue and Gold squarely in control of the set. The Wildcats came back with three consecutive points, but after a timeout called by Joslynn Gallop, ERAU scored the last two points to win the set, 25-21.
 
A 7-0 run early in set two established a 9-4 lead for the Eagles, which would be a lead that ERAU never relinquished. A kill from Ferreira made it 12-6 and a Ruiz ace pushed it to 15-8. Ferreira registered a service ace to increase the lead to 20-10 and the Blue and Gold would go on to take the set, 25-14, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Indiana Wesleyan scored three straight points to take a 10-7 lead in set three and the Eagles were never able to pull even for the remainder of the stanza. ERAU kept things close as late as 15-13, but the Wildcats scored 10 of the final 15 points to win the frame, 25-18, pushing the match to a fourth set with Embry-Riddle leading two sets to one.
 
The Wildcats held an early 9-5 lead in the fourth set before the Eagles scored four straight to tie it at 9-9. A 6-1 run put IWU ahead, 15-10, but the Blue and Gold continued to fight, eventually regaining the lead at 20-18 thanks to a 6-0 rally. Jacobson recorded a kill to make it 23-20 and Beatty closed out the match with her 13th kill, giving Embry-Riddle a 25-23 win in the set and a 3-1 win in the match.
 
The Eagles return to action on Friday, Nov. 1, when St. Thomas pays a visit to the ICI Center for a 7 p.m. match.
