BABSON PARK, Fla. – After surviving a tight first set, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team sailed through the next two frames en route a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-10, 25-21) at Webber International on Friday night. The Eagles improved to 7-6, 4-1 in conference play, while the Warriors fell to 8-11, 2-4 in league action.
Jennifer Beatty's 11 kills led all players while
Erika Hinel and
Cheye-Anne Savage chipped in seven kills each.
Hannah Gray collected a match-high 15 digs and
Tamires Ferreira tallied a match-leading 28 assists and five service aces.
Anitaka Knight led the Warriors with nine kills; Karimah Hay added five kills and a team-high 10 digs. Sabina Gerard led the team with 19 assists.
Embry-Riddle jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set before WIU started to battle back. The Warriors eventually took a 19-18 lead after scoring five straight points, but the Eagles got a big solo block from Ferreira to take the lead back, 22-21. A kill from Beatty gave ERAU set point at 24-22, but the Warriors didn't fold, scoring back-to-back points to tie it at 24. Beatty stepped up with another kill to make it 25-24 Eagles, and Ferreira's service ace clinched the set, 26-24.
The Blue and Gold took an early 6-4 lead in set two that quickly ballooned into a large 16-6 lead thanks to a 10-2 run. The Eagles hit just .143 in the frame but they limited Webber International to only three kills and a -.214 hitting percentage, which helped ERAU take the set, 25-10.
Set three saw the Warriors get an early jump, sprinting out to a 5-1 lead. A block by Ferreira and Savage sparked an 8-0 run that put the Eagles in front, 9-5, and the Blue and Gold didn't give up the lead from then on. A 4-0 spurt keyed by two Savage kills made it 22-12, and despite a 9-2 run late for WIU, Embry-Riddle held on for a 25-21 win, completing the 3-0 sweep.
