ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Thursday night's season opener for the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team ended in a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes at Flagler's Saints Field. The Eagles (0-0-1) took a 2-0 lead into the half, but Flagler (0-0-1) rallied with a pair of late scores, including the game-tying goal with just 9.3 seconds left in regulation, to send the game to extra time.
The Eagles will open up the home portion of their 2014 slate on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they play host to Sunshine State Conference member Barry at 7 p.m. at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The first 30 minutes of the game featured little in the way of scoring opportunities as the Saints owned a 7-2 advantage in shots.
Moriba Ballah registered the first Eagle shot of the season, but his effort sailed high with 26 minutes remaining in the period.
Â
Flagler's keeper Lex Craggs kept the Blue and Gold off the scoreboard when
Daniel Gylfason recorded a shot with 24 minutes left after some fancy footwork allowed him to get a shot on goal.
Â
The scoring opened in the 31
st minute with
Veit Couturier got the ball on the left side of the field and dribbled towards the middle of the pitch where he tried his luck just outside the box and his curling effort beat Craggs on the near side of the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Saints ratcheted up the pressure after the Couturier goal with several shots on frame, but each time Carlson and his defense were up to the task, turning away FC's shots to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Â
Ballah nearly put the Eagles up by two with five minutes remaining, but a great defensive effort by a Saints' defender kept the sophomore from scoring after Craggs was beaten by Ballah.
Â
Embry-Riddle added a big insurance goal with just 36 seconds left in the half when the referee's decision to allow the Eagles to play on after a collision in the midfield put Couturier on the ball in the FC defensive third. Couturier found Gylfason on the left side of the box and the Eagle newcomer rocketed a shot to the right side of the goal past Craggs for a 2-0 cushion.
The second half started slowly for both teams as neither team could find much in the way of offense, but it was Flagler who found the back of the net in the 77th minute when Marco Warren was the beneficiary of a Triston Hall flick in the box and Warren was able to Beat Carlson to cut the FC deficit to 2-1.
Daniel McClintock almost gave the Eagles back a two-goal lead with a shot outside the box that was saved by Craggs and the Eagle defense proved to be up to the task when the ball was cleared off the line in with just under 16 minutes left to keep the Eagles in front.
It looked like the Eagles would be able to hold on for the 2-1 victory, but after the referee repeatedly stopped the clock, the Saints were able to capitalize when Simeon Wickii launched a cross into the box from 40 yards out where Jonny Cosgrove put a head on it and knotted the match at 2-2 with just 9.3 seconds on the clock.
The Eagles had a pair opportunities in the first overtime period to come away with a win, but Couturier's shot with 30 seconds left was saved by Craggs at point blank range and the match moved on to the second OT period.
Flagler managed three shots in the final overtime period, with two on frame, but Carlson made his eighth and ninth saves of the night to keep the match a stalemate.
Flagler outshot the Eagles 27-16 and 12-9 in shots on goal while the Blue and Gold was whistled for 18 fouls to the Saints' 14.
Couturier's three first half points tied him with Ian Thompson at seventh all-time in career points.
The 2-2 draw marked the first-ever season-opening tie in 26 seasons of Eagle soccer.
