HASTINGS, Neb. – The 21st-ranked Embry-Riddle volleyball team earned a split on the first day of the Five Points Bank Invitational, falling to No. 3 Wayland Baptist in three sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-12) and knocking off Hastings, 3-2 (27-25, 20-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-5). With the results, ERAU now stands at 2-3 on the young season, while WBU moves to 3-2 and Hastings falls to 7-3.
 
Jennifer Beatty led the Blue and Gold against Wayland Baptist, notching 18 kills, while Ana Pajic added eight kills and Evelina Abdurakhmanova chipped in seven kills. Tamires Ferreiera tallied 36 assists and Hannah Gray recorded 12 digs.
 
Shahala Hawkins led the Pioneers with 17 kills while Amanda Deitz registered eight kills and six blocks (two solo). Ashlyn Westerman totaled 38 assists and eight digs to lead the team.
 
After falling behind early, 6-2, ERAU rallied to take its first lead at 9-8 on a kill from Ferreira. The two sides battled back and forth, with neither squad able to pull ahead by more than two points. A kill from Beatty made it 23-22 Embry-Riddle, but WBU closed the frame with three straight points to win the set, 25-23.
 
The Eagles started strong in set two, running out to a 10-4 lead. The Pioneers clawed back, but Embry-Riddle maintained its lead, holding a 17-14 advantage after an Erika Hinel kill. Wayland Baptist rallied for five straight points to take a 19-17 lead, only to see the Eagles bounce back with a 4-0 run to retake the lead, 21-19. A pair of ERAU errors tied the set at 21, and the Pioneers kept the momentum, scoring four more points to take the set, 25-21.
 
Embry-Riddle held a slim 7-6 lead in the third set before WBU ripped off a 13-1 run, taking a commanding 19-8 lead. ERAU couldn't muster a comeback, falling in the final set, 25-12.

In the nightcap, the Eagles got another strong effort from Beatty to help defeat the host Broncos. Beatty tallied a career-high 25 kills and three blocks while hitting .298 and picking up seven digs. Caitlyn Ballard and Cheye-Anne Savage each chipped in six kills, while Ella Duggan contributed five blocks (two solo). Ferreira recorded 48 assists, 12 digs and five service aces, while Gray racked up 41 digs.
 
Abigayle Preissler recorded 22 kills to lead the Broncos and Katie Zoucha contributed 17 kills. Katie Placke had 49 assists, 18 digs, and a match-high six blocks, while Jill Bax picked up 23 digs.
 
An early 9-0 run helped the Broncos to establish a solid 13-4 lead, which they maintained throughout most of the set. Trailing 21-13, Embry-Riddle got a kill from Ballard that sparked a quick 3-0 run to pull the Blue and Gold within five points at 21-16. The hosts looked to be in control, swapping sideouts until the score was 24-18. Beatty put down a kill to make it 24-19, giving the serve to Ferreira, who aced two of her first three serves to help pull ERAU within two at 24-22. A Beatty/Duggan block followed by an Abdurakhmanova kill knotted things up at 24, and another Ferriera ace gave ERAU an unlikely set point at 25-24. A service error tied it at 25, but back-to-back Hastings errors handed the set to the Eagles, 27-25.
 
HC took another early lead in set two, but this time, the hosts didn't squander it. Back-to-back Zoucha kills made it 19-11 and a Preissler kill closed out the set, 25-20.
 
Set three looked very similar to set two, with Hastings taking an early 13-6 lead and never looking back. Preissler notched kills on two of the final three points, giving HC a 25-19 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
The Eagles came out firing a lot more consistently in set four, taking an early 12-7 advantage thanks to an 8-3 run keyed by four HC errors. The Broncos rallied to pull within a point (14-13), but Beatty stemmed the tide with a kill that sparked a 7-0 run to make it 21-13 ERAU. Hastings got to within five (24-19), but Pajic put down the clinching kill to give Embry-Riddle a 25-19 win, forcing a decisive fifth set.
 
The Blue and Gold dominated the fifth set, hitting .462 while holding HC to a -.125 clip. Hinel put down a kill on the opening point and then served four straight Eagle points, helping ERAU to a quick 5-0 lead. Savage caught fire midway through the set, scoring three straight kills to spark a 7-0 run that put Embry-Riddle in front, 13-4. Three points later, Gray aced a serve to finish the set and match, 15-5 and 3-0, respectively.
 
The Eagles are back at it tomorrow as they take on No. 14 Oklahoma Baptist at 12 p.m. EDT and No. 7 Midland at 4 p.m. EDT on the final day of the Five Points Bank Invitational. Live stats for both matches will be available at erauathletics.com/live.
