DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team held off Trinity International on Saturday afternoon, 55-42 in their final game of the 2015 Bahama House & Best Western Aku Tiki Shootout, moving to 8-3 overall to wrap up the non-conference slate for the first-year program. The Eagles pulled away late from the Trojans (0-16) who got to within a point with less than 10 minutes left, ending the game on a 17-5 run to run their winning streak to six straight.
Kalah Martin and
Taylor Cyphers did most of the damage for the Blue and Gold, going for 13 and 12 points, respectively while the Eagles shot a fair percentage from the floor (44.4%) and held the Trojans to just 21.1% on the defensive end. The Eagles struggled turning the ball over and committing fouls, recording 27 turnovers and being whistled for 19 fouls, leading to 28 free throw attempts for TIU.
The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the first minute before Cyphers knotted things up with a pair of free throws a few minutes later as both teams struggled shooting the ball early on. Cyphers' layup with 16:47 on the clock gave the Eagles the lead for good as ERAU took it to 11-3 on a Martin fastbreak layup following an
Ashle Muse steal.
Jatoya Woods, who finished the contest with a game-high 23 points, scored four straight in the paint for TIU, followed by a jumper from Nika Bracun that brought the Eagle lead to just 11-9, but ERAU responded with a
Sabrina Whiting layup and Muse triple to regain a more comfortable advantage.
Tara Fields scored two consecutive trips down the floor with two minutes left in the period as ERAU grabbed a 24-13 lead heading into the break.
Martin and Cyphers took control early in the second half with eight of the team's first 10 points coming out of the locker room, but Woods continued to drive and get fouled en route to 24 free throw attempts, of which she connected on 15, keeping TIU in the game.
Midway through the half, the Trojans started their comeback, creeping to within six on a Basha Ramsey jumper and then to within three when Amari Parham nailed a three with 10:56 left.
Mercedes Jorge grabbed an offensive board and made a layup to push the Eagle lead back to five, but four straight from Woods cut the lead to just 38-37 with 9:35 left.
Field and Cyphers both hit jumpers in the lane before
Ashley McWilliams registered a momentum-building trey with 5:05 left, putting the hosts on top, 47-39.
Following three made free throws from Woods, the Eagles pulled away under four minutes left as Jorge scored four straight, followed by four from Martin to finish the contest as the Eagle defense held TIU scoreless from the field over the final six minutes of game time.
ERAU grabbed 45 rebounds (seven each from Martin, Cyphers and Jorge) while racking up 18 assists on 24 made field goals.
Embry-Riddle will turn its attention to Sun Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 7 as the Eagles visit Warner at 5 p.m. in Lake Wales.
