DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team dropped a defensive battle to the reigning NCAA Division II National Champions and current No. 21, Lynn Knights on Saturday night, 2-0. The Eagles looked dangerous all night on the counter attack but were unable to get the last crucial touch on the ball to find the back of the net. With the win, Lynn improves to 7-3-2 on the year while ERAU falls to 2-9.
The run of play to start the game took a defensive turn as the Eagle back line had the Knights whistled for four offside calls before they could even record a shot.
In fact, neither team registered a shot until the 32nd minute of action. That first shot was a goal by Lynn's Chris Hellmann. He connected on a give and go from Lukas Zlatarits in the Embry-Riddle penalty area.
Down by a goal, the Eagles pushed forward to start the second half and took their first shot at net. In the 51st minute,
Pierre Hertin sent a long sailing shot towards the goal that nearly went over goalkeeper Jonny DeMoya's head but he was able to snag it for a save.
Pushing forward again just minutes later, the Eagles won a corner kick and Hertin hammered it into the box.
Jason Van Achteren was inches away from getting his head on the end of it as it was instead deflected to the feet of
Daniel Gylfason. He took a touch and ripped a shot but the Lynn defenders blocked it.
On another fast break for the Eagles,
Felix Lohmeyer was fed a ball through the Knight defense. He sent in a shot and was simultaneously dragged down inside the box and the referee whistled for a penalty kick.
Magnus Magnusson took the kick for the Blue and Gold in the 70th minute but the chance sailed just high.
The Knights were able to secure the 2-0 win 11 minutes later connecting on a penalty kick of their own. Sebastian Schulz lined in a hard shot to the right corner of the net just past a diving
Jeff Bone.
Despite the loss, the Eagles held Lynn to just four shots, the Knights lowest mark of the season.
The Eagles return to the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium for the last home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The home side takes on Rollins at 7pm for senior night.
