Game Recap: #20 Women's Basketball |

Eagles Fall to Flagler 60-48

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team hosted over 950 elementary school students as part of a successful Education Day event on Friday, but came up short on the basketball court against Flagler College, falling to the Saints 60-48 at the ICI Center.

The Eagles (3-5), whose starting point guard Lauren Ellenberger was out with an injury, were able to hold the Saints to just 26.7% shooting from the field, but 24 miscues on the offensive end led to 20 Flagler points and helped the Saints improve to 4-1 on the year.

The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the contest and behind Sabrina Whiting's eight points, led 17-13 at the end of the first period.

Both teams were fairly even from the field in the second frame with ERAU shooting 31.3 % (5-16) and Flagler shooting 30.8% (4-13). However, the Saints made 10 trips to the free throw line, compared to just one by the Eagles. Flagler converted on six of those attempts, and that, coupled with nine points off turnovers, helped the Saints pull level with the Eagles, 28-28 at the half.

Flagler won the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 13-3, including a three by Alex Alford at the buzzer that gave the Saints a 10-point cushion (41-31).

The fourth quarter was more closely contested, but while the Eagles were able to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball and bested the Saints 5-2 in made field goals, Flagler did the majority of its damage at the free throw line, going 14-18 to close out the contest.

"We didn't defend well today at all," ERAU Head Coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson state. "Putting them on the line with 32 free throws, then adding some poor shooting and decision making to the mix and the result is usually not going to be in our favor.

"Not having our starting point guard definitely made a difference today, and when Sabrina had to sit with foul trouble in the third quarter, that was tough for us. But we're looking forward to practice next week. Now that exams are over we will be able to work on a lot and try to be more consistent."

The Eagles got 14 and 10 points from Whiting and Laniere Coleman, respectively, with Coleman adding five rebounds and four blocks. Mercedes Jorge and Kalah Martin led the Eagles with eight rebounds each, while Rachel Briere led the Eagles bench production with a season-high seven points.

DeAsha Campbell led all scorers with 21 points, while Alford added 13, and Tiffany Hodge finished on point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Saints.

The Eagles will close out the first half of their 2015-16 slate at the Trip Sports Cruzin' Classic next week in Fort Lauderdale. ERAU will face Georgetown (Ky.) at 1 p.m. on Thursday and Findlay at 10 a.m. on Friday.
