FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team suffered its fifth loss in a row on Friday, fall 64-42 to Findlay (9-1) in the Eagles' final game of the Trip Sports Cruzin' Classic.
Sabrina Whiting and
Ashley McWilliams paced the Blue and Gold with 12 points apiece, while
Laniere Coleman pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go with three blocks.
Whiting scored the first two points of the game from the free throw line to give the Eagles an early lead, but the Oilers outscored the Blue and Gold 12-2 over the next five minutes to take over the lead.
The Eagles made it a three-point game early in the second frame, but another Findlay run allowed the Oilers to widen the gap and a 50 percent shooting clip in the second 10 minutes of play helped them to a 38-25 advantage at the half.
The third quarter proved to be ERAU's undoing as they struggled to shoot the ball from the field. The Eagles' only points came from the free throw line where they were 3-for-4, while the Oilers shot 40 percent (6-for-15) from the field and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe to widen the gap to 54-28.
The Eagles were able to limit Findlay's trips to the charity strip to just five in the fourth quarter and outscored the Oilers 14-10 in the final frame, but the effort was not enough to make up the deficit, moving the Eagles to 3-7 on the year.
"I am really proud of our team for bouncing back after the loss yesterday," ERAU Head Coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson stated. "The score doesn't reflect how well we played today. Defensively we did a really good job against a tough team. Over the break we need to commit to working on our offensive skills and executing for the best shot possible and continue to grow and improve".
The Eagles' next game will be on Jan. 2 when they return to Ft. Lauderdale to face Nova Southeastern for a 2 p.m. tip.
