WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Sabrina Whiting scored a program-record 26 points and Kalah Martin scored a career-high 20 to lead the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team to a 66-55 win at Northwood on Tuesday night. The Eagles now stand at 14-9 on the year, 6-7 in conference play, while the Seahawks dropped to 4-18, 3-10 in conference.
Whiting connected on 6-of-11 field goals including 3-of-5 from behind the arc and was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, hitting 11-of-12 free throws. Whiting also dished out four assists and grabbed four steals. Martin pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to scoring 20 points and Taylor Cyphers finished just shy of a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds and a game-high four blocks.
For the Seahawks, Stephanie Granada led the way with 14 points while Kiera Duncanson added 11 points, four steals and four rebounds.
Embry-Riddle dominated the early portion of the contest, scoring the game's first 14 points. From the point, ERAU enjoyed a comfortable advantage throughout the half, leading by at least seven points and closing the period on a 6-0 run to push the lead up to 38-24 at the break.
Whiting and Martin combined for 24 points in the first half as the Blue and Gold shot a blistering 59.1 percent from the field, while limiting NU to just 33.3 percent. ERAU also dominated the glass, outrebounding Northwood 22-10.
Martin opened the second half scoring with a triple to extend the lead to 17 points (41-24), the largest of the game. Northwood bounced back in the middle stages of the half, using an 11-0 run to narrow the deficit to just three points (45-42) with 10:34 to play.
Embry-Riddle showed its resiliency and responded by scoring nine straight points in less than two minutes to make it a 12-point game (54-42) with 8:39 on the clock.
The Seahawks again mounted a rally and by the 3:47 mark the margin had again shrunk to three (56-53), but the home team couldn't find enough in the tank to complete the comeback. ERAU bowed up defensively, allowing just two points the rest of the way while scoring 10 to pull away for the 66-55 victory.
The Blue and Gold won the battle of the boards easily, outrebounding Northwood 44-27 in the game. The Eagles were also much more efficient on offense, shooting 45.8 percent compared to NU's 33.3 shooting percentage.
Embry-Riddle lands back at home on Thursday to host Southeastern for the first game of a four-game home stand. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
