NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team wrapped up its inaugural regular season on Saturday afternoon with an 85-83 overtime victory over Johnson & Wales, earning a home game in The Sun Conference Tournament on Feb. 24. The Eagles will take on Thomas in the ICI Center, game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Eagles (17-11, 9-9) scored the final three points in the overtime period to come away with the win as Johnson & Wales (9-19, 5-13) had a potential game-tying layup blocked by
Taylor Cyphers with three seconds left.
Mercedes Jorge gave the Eagles an 84-83 lead on a layup with 39 seconds left in OT, getting a feed from
Sabrina Whiting. The layup marked the sixth and last lead change in the extra period. Cyphers connected on a free throw with 27 seconds left to put the Eagles up 85-83.
On the Wildcats' next trip down the court, Cyphers recorded the second of her three blocks to deny Joanne Tran, and after grabbing the rebound Jorge was fouled and sent back to the free throw line with seven seconds left to play. Jorge came up empty on both of her free throws and the Wildcats pulled down the defensive rebound and raced the length of the to try and tie the game. JWU got the ball to Kristina Bridges for the winning shot, but once again, Cyphers came up with a big block, giving the Eagles the win.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the overtime period, starting with a Diamond Williams free throw with 3:38 remaining. JWU went up 78-76 on a Joanne Tran jumper before Whiting went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to knot things up. Williams made 1-of-2 free throws on the next JWU possession, setting up Jorge's eventual game-winning layup.
The Eagles took a 34-28 lead into halftime, led by 11 points from Whiting as the freshman connected on 5-of-7 field goal attempts. Cyphers and
Kalah Martin both chipped in seven points in the opening frame while Jorge added six.
ERAU took hold of the game with an 8-0 run early on, going up 11-4 on a Whiting layup with just under 13 minutes left in the first.
The Eagles held a comfortable lead for most of the half, going up by 15 when Whiting connected on a trey with 5:32 on the clock. After a triple from Martin that made it 34-22, the Wildcats ended the half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 34-28 at the break.
JWU came out of the half on fire, getting to withing two at 37-35 when Kristina Bridges made a layup. The visitors responded with five quick points from Jorge and Cyphers.
The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, with the Eagles getting the better of play, going up 52-42 on a triple from
Ashley McWilliams with 13:22 left in regulation.
After back-to-back jumpers from Tran got the Wildcats to within five at 58-53, McWilliams was fouled on a three attempt, making all three to get the Eagles back in front by eight.
McWilliams hit a three with 9:54 left to push the ERAU advantage to 64-55, but over the next five minutes the Wildctas went on a 12-2 run to regain the lead on a Kari Roberson fastbreak layup.
Neither team led by more than three over the final five minutes and after two free throws from Jorge with 45 seconds left put the Eagles up 75-73, the hosts turned to Tran who made a layup with 27 seconds remaining to tie the game. Whiting's three-pointer was off the mark with two seconds left and the game was sent to OT.
Whiting paced the Eagles with 18 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals. Cyphers finished with 16 points and seven boards while Jorge added 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Martin and McWilliams reached double-figures with 10 points each.
Bridges led all scorers with 24 for JWU while Williams added 20 poitns and eight boards and Tran finished with 16 points.
