DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- A five-run first set the tone on Wednesday evening as the 19th-ranked Davenport Panthers downed the No. 11 Embry-Riddle Eagles 16-4 at ERAU's Sliwa Stadium. The loss was the worst home defeat for the Eagles (9-5) since opening day 2006 when Brewton-Parker beat the Blue and Gold 16-5. Davenport (7-1) collected 16 hits and went up 13-0 before the Eagles could finally answer en route to the 12-run victory.
Five hits off of
Clayton Wagner in the first led to five runs for the Panthers and the visitors tacked on two more in the second and four more in the third to put the game out of reach early on.
The Eagles got a pair of runs back in the fourth when
Matt Jacobs doubled home
Joshua Garcia and
Liam Goodall to cut the lead to 13-2 and
Bruce Wong kept the momentum with the home team as he delivered the first shutout frame in the fifth.
Embry-Riddle plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, one on a
Jake Cavender triple that scored
Tobias Moreno before Cavender scored on a wild pitch, but the visitors quickly answered with three runs in the sixth to account for the 16-4 final.
Wagner (1-1) was tagged with the loss while
Kyle Krebs, Wong and
Corey Tufts all saw action on the mound for ERAU. Garcia was the only Eagle player to collect two hits.
Embry-Riddle hosts Ave Maria on Friday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in the first game of a three-game Sun Conference set.
