DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team trailed for eight-and-a-half innings on Tuesday, but a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth gave the Eagles a 6-5 walk-off victory over the visiting Huntington Foresters. Matt Jacobs scored the winning run on a Logan Malphurs sacrifice fly to complete the comeback.
With the win, ERAU improves to 18-12 on the season, while Huntington drops to 1-4.
HU got on the board early with a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Billy Geeslin in the top of the first. The Eagles cut the lead in half on an RBI double from Jacobs in the second, but ERAU left runners at second and third to end the inning still trailing, 2-1.
Embry-Riddle had another scoring opportunity in the next inning, but Jacobs was called out on strikes to end the frame, leaving the bases loaded.
Huntington got its third run of the game on a wild pitch in the fourth, and the Foresters tacked on two more runs in the sixth to extend their cushion to 5-1.
The Blue and Gold got the bats going in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits. Enderson Velasquez singled in Tobias Moreno to make it a 5-2 game, and after a Forester pitching change, Joshua Garcia singled with two strikes to score Liam Goodall. Two batters later, Dalton Hughes knocked in Velasquez with a base hit to trim the deficit to a single run, 5-4.
The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Garcia ripped a double to the wall in right-center, and Jacobs followed with a double of his own, which scored Garcia with the tying run. After an intentional walk to Hughes, Jordan Brown shot a base hit through the left side of the infield for his first hit, loading the bases with one out. Malphurs, who had come in to the game in the fifth inning as a defensive substitution, lifted a 2-0 pitch into shallow right field. After the catch was made, Jacobs tagged from third, but because the ball wasn't hit deeply, HU first baseman Shea Beauchamp instinctively cut off the throw, assuming Jacobs was bluffing from third. By the time Beauchamp turned to look at home plate, Jacobs was sliding in safely with the winning run.
Garcia finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI, while Jacobs was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Velasquez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Moreno was 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Clayton Wagner (4-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball with no hits or walks allowed and two strikeouts. Austen Thrailkill was the starter for ERAU; he lasted 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out five.
Geeslin went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored at the plate for Huntington, while T.J. Lindstrand was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Geeslin (0-1) also took the loss on the hill, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of relief.
The Eagles return to action Friday afternoon to open a three-game Sun Conference series at South Carolina Beaufort. Friday's game starts at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
