@ERAUBaseball Completes Sweep of USCB with Offensive Saturday

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - The Embry-Riddle Eagles brought their bats to the Richard Gray Sports Complex on Saturday, pounding out 30 hits and scoring 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep fo the USCB Sand Sharks, 10-6 and 18-2. The Eagles (21-12, 9-5) completed their first Sun Conference sweep of the 2015 season while USCB (22-12, 9-9) dropped their second straight conference series.

ERAU hosts Talladega (Ala.) on Monday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Sliwa Stadium.

Game 1 • ERAU 10, USCB 6
In the day's opener, the Eagles took an early 5-0 lead and added five more runs over the course of the contest, holding off USCB 10-6 to claim the series victory. Tyler Cyr walked six, but scattered eight hits and gave up just two earned runs to earn the win, while six Eagles recorded multi-hit games.

Jamie Strock tossed 5.2 innings for the Sand Sharks, but gave up nine runs (four earned) on 11 hits to be saddled with the loss.

The game started all Blue and Gold as the visitors scored five unearned runs in first to take a commanding lead against USCB. A.J. Mazzurco singled up the middle before Liam Goodall reached on a catcher's interference. A fielding error allowed Enderson Velasque to reach and load the bases before Joshua Garcia singled in a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead. Matt Jacobs doubled down the left field line for two more runs before scoring a few batters later on a Kyle Buchanan single to center field.

Cyr allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, giving up three hits and a walk as USCB cut the lead to 5-2 and after the Eagles went quietly in the second the Sand Sharks plated an unearned run for a 5-3 deficit.

Both pitchers traded 1-2-3 third frames before Buchanan started the fourth with a triple to left center. However, Strock got two quick outs before walking Goodall and it was up to Velasquez to single to short and drive in the run from third for a 6-3 cushion.

Cyr worked around two walks in the bottom of the fourth and his team tacked on another run in the fifth when Buchanan singled to center to bring home Logan Malphurs, courtesy running for Dalton Hughes, making the score 7-3 in favor of ERAU.

A double play ended the USCB fifth and again the Eagles added some runs in the next half-inning when Jacobs chased home Kyle Zirbes from second and Mazzurco from third with a two-out single to left center as the Eagles enjoyed a 9-3 cushion.

Cyr worked a scoreless sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh when the bases became loaded with Sand Sharks and he walked a run in with no outs. Clayton Wagner relieved the Eagle started, and after giving up a sacrifice fly got out of the inning with no further damage by popping up pinch hitter Zack Holt to end the frame.

The Sand Sharks got to within 9-6 in the eighth on an Ashly Morris double that plated Bubba Martin, but the Eagles quickly answered in the ninth when Hughes started the inning with a triple and later his courtesy runner Malphurs scored on a two-out single up the middle from Tobias Moreno.

Zac Grotz came out for the bottom of the ninth, and after a ground out and walk, started a 1-6-3 double play to end the game in favor of ERAU, 10-6.

Cyr improved to 3-2 with the win while Wagner pitched 1.2 innings of relief and Grotz faced the minimum in the ninth.

Jacobs finished with four RBIs on two hits while Buchanan drove in a pair of runs on three base hits. Hughes, Garcia, Velasquez and Moreno each had two hits as well for the Blue and Gold.

Game 2 • ERAU 18, USCB 2
Big innings spelled trouble for the Sand Sharks in the series finale as the Eagles pushed across 18 runs on 15 hits, including huge games from Garcia, Jacobs and Hughes as the trio combined for eight hits, 11 RBIs and five runs.

Corey Tufts was the only Eagle pitcher in the finale, tossing all seven innings in the mercy-shortened contest, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out nine Sand Shark batters.

It was actually the hosts that struch first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning, but Jake Cavender tied things up in the second with a two-out single to right, plating Jacobs after he doubled down the right field line in the previous at-bat.

After a perfect second inning from Tufts the Eagles took a 4-1 lead in the third and never looked back. Garcia collected his first RBI of the game with a base hit to right, scoring Moreno from second, and then Hughes brought in two with a double to left center that chased in both Mazzurco and Garcia.

Embry-Riddle sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven runs on four hits to put the game out of reach. After Cavender singled to start the inning, Gage Roth was chase from the game and Kyle Zirbes was hit by a pitch and Buchanan reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. A bases-loaded walk issued to Moreno accounted for the first run in the frame and Mazzurco, Goodall, Garcia, Hughes and Jacobs all collected RBIs from there on out, including another double from Hughes and a two-run homer off the bat of Jacobs that accounted for the final two runs of the inning.

Back-to-back hits for the Sand Sharks resulted in their second run of the contest, but Tufts kept the damage to just the one run, sending the game to the fifth with an 11-2 lead.

Goodall registered an RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Zirbes after the Eagle third baseman started the inning with a walk and moved around the diamond to third.

Tufts struck out five of the next seven batters he faced in the fifth and sixth and the visitors put the excalamation point on the series with a six-spot in the seventh to take an 18-2 advantage. Zirbes started the inning with a base hit, followed by a Buchanan walk. After two outs were recorded Goodall singled to right center before Garcia doubled and Hughes smoked a pitch over the fence in left for three runs. After a Jacobs double, Cavender singled to right to account for the 18th and final run of the contest.

Tufts took care of USCB in the last of the seventh to collect his first complete game of the 2015 season.

Goodall finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Garcia was 2-for-4 for three RBIs and two runs, Hughes went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and a run scored while both Jacobs and Cavender finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
