DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team overcame a slow start to down Lynn 66-55 on Saturday. Playing at home for the first time in three games, the Eagles had three players score in double figures to improve to 5-10 on the year.
After scoring just three points in the first half,
Sabrina Whiting scored 16 second-half points to lead all scorers with 19.
Laniere Coleman scored a season-high 13 points to go with nine boards and five blocks, while
Mercedes Jorge tallied 12 points.
The first period saw both teams combine for just 14 points as the Fighting Knights shot just 27.3 percent from the field and the managed only a 16.7 percent shooting clip.
The offense picked up on both sides in the second quarter as ERAU and Lynn shot 36.8 and 35.29, respectively. Seven different players scored for the Eagles who bested the Fighting Knights 19-17 in the frame to tie the score at 25 at the half.
Lynn scored the first basket of the third quarter to go up 27-25 and still led by two with 7:17 left in the frame. At the 6:22 mark, Coleman tied things up again, finishing a pass from
Kalah Martin, and a
Lauren Ellenberger three on their next possession gave the Eagles their first lead of the game.
The Eagles led 45-41 to start the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 Lynn run put the visitors back in front, 48-45 with 6:36 remaining the contest. With the Eagles trailing by two, Coleman made two layups and a free throw, and recorded a block to reclaim the lead for Eagles.
Sabrina Whiting took over the game for ERAU at that point, scoring nine points in the final 2:45 to help the Eagles to their second straight win.
Charla Nelson-James paced Lynn with 16 points and six rebounds as the Fighting Knights fall to 2-13 overall.
The Eagles will be back in the ICI Center at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to host Eckerd.
