DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team (3-9) suffered its first home loss of 2016, falling to Florida Southern (13-1) 87-71, Wednesday at the ICI Center.
Sabrina Whiting led all scorers with 25 points for the Eagles, while
Kalah Martin added 13 points and seven rebounds, and
Mercedes Jorge contributed 10 points and five rebounds to the Eagle effort.
Both teams shot 26-of-62 from the field and Embry-Riddle had a 7-5 advantage in made free throws, but the difference in the game came at the free throw line where FSC was 30-for-34, while the Eagles were just 12-for-18.
ERAU was the better shooting team in the first period going 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the field compared to 28.6 percent (4-for-14) by the Mocs. But eight fouls called against the Blue and Gold resulted in 13 points from the charity stripe and helped the visitors to a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes of action.
The Eagles still trailed by 10 in the first part of the second quarter, but a pair of free throws by Martin and a jumper by
Ashle Muse helped cut the lead to six (35-29) with 3:46 left in the frame. While the Eagles improved their shooting to 53.8 percent (7-of-13) in the frame, they were unable to further narrow the margin as the Mocs ended the quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 43-33 lead into the halftime break.
Despite trailing by double digits for most of the contest, the Eagles refused to quit reducing a 19-point third-quarter deficit to a 13-point game with two minutes left in the fourth. Whiting knocked down one of her game-high five three-pointers to make the score 79-66, but the Eagles missed four of their last six shots of the game, allowing Florida Southern to leave with the 16-point win.
FSC's Mariah Harris was 10-of-11 from the free throw line and was one of four Moc players in double digits with 24 points. Anja Fuchs-Robetin and Jensen Blassage each had double-digit performances with 11 points and 12 rebounds apiece.
The Eagles are back on the road on Saturday when they travel to Miami Shores for a 2 p.m. tip against Barry.
