LAKELAND Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team picked up its second draw of the season on Wednesday, tying Florida Southern 1-1 in double overtime at the Moccasins' Barnett Field. The tie puts the Eagles at 8-3-2 on the year, while FSC moves to 1-8-2.
"I am so proud of the effort our ladies put forward tonight!" ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "We fought so hard against some unavoidable adversity. We knew FSC was much better than their record, so we expected a good game. Elvira scored a fantastic goal and we really could have added 1-2 more in the first half, but we were pleased with how we opened the game. The second half didn't see too many chances by either team, as both teams were defending well. Overall, it was a strong effort and I'm very pleased with each player's investment tonight."
Battling adversity from the start with the loss of four starters to injury, the Eagles put the Mocs under pressure early in the contest. Within the first four minutes, the Eagles recorded three corner kicks and three shots, including a header by
Hanna Rolfsen and a strike by
Gudrun Johnson that forced FSC goalkeeper Helena Norrstrom to make a pair of parrying saves over the crossbar.
The play gradually shifted to the other end of the field, but midway through the first period, it shifted back and that's when the Eagles got on the board.
After winning the ball in the Mocs defensive third,
Elizabeth Allen squared a pass to
Elvira Ramel in the 27
th minute. Ramel rocketed a blast into the upper left corner from 25 yards out and her second goal of the year gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which they maintained at the half.
The Eagles got off to a shaky start in the second half and the Mocs capitalized, as Jesse Goede deposited an errant Eagle clearance into the roof of the net to tie the score at 1-1 with 32 minutes left in the game.
Both sides played tough defense, limiting their respective opponents to shots from long range. Despite 21 shots by the Eagles and 14 by Florida Southern, neither team was able to break the deadlock in the remainder of regulation and two periods of overtime, resulting in the 1-1 final.
The Eagles will close out their home slate at 6 p.m. on Saturday when they host Florida Tech in a contest that was rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew.
