SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team was unable to come away from Salt Lake City with a win on Tuesday, as a short-handed Eagle squad fell to Westminster (10-4-3) 2-1 at the Griffins' Dumke Field. Tuesday marked the final game in an Embry-Riddle uniform for seniors
Andrea Froshaug,
Isabelle Haaranen,
Johanna Karlsson,
Tiffany Larsen and
Hanna Rolfsen, who led the Blue and Gold to an 8-5-2 ledger in 2016.
"I'm so grateful for these seniors and the investment they've made in our program" ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "We wish we could have sent them off under better circumstances, but we just couldn't overcome injuries today. We will greatly miss this group as they helped us achieve the most successful seasons we've had in our program's history. And they are equally outstanding people."
The Griffins kept the Eagles pinned in their defensive half of the pitch for much of the opening frame, and that pressure resulted in both of their goals coming early in the contest. Both scores were the result of corner kicks with Madison Roemer heading home Alicia May's delivery in the seventh minute, and Maddie Klein collecting the ball after a brief scramble in front of the goal and doubling the Westminster lead at the 8:46 mark.
Westminster outshot ERAU 9-1 in the first half, but the Eagle defense, led by five saves by
Fanny Kristiansson kept the Griffins from adding to their tally, and the score remained 2-0 at the half.
The Griffins continued to pressure the ERAU defense in the second half, but the Eagles withstood the challenge and began to create more chances going forward.
At the 87:38, the Eagles drew a foul in the midfield. Stine Naess Berge launched the free kick into the box where
Hanna Rolfsen rose to head the ball into the left side of the goal to make the score 2-1.
While the Eagles' intensity picked up in the latter stages of the game, time was against them as they were unable to come up with another score in the final two minutes of the game.
Kristiansson, who played every minute in goal for ERAU in 2016, collected nine saves for the Eagles who are expected to begin full NCAA II membership in the Fall of 2017.
