DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team dropped its final match of the season in a 2-0 loss against Emmanuel College. The Eagles' finish the season with a 3-10-3 record while the Lions improve to 11-7 overall.
"We are disappointed we couldn't send the seniors off with a win," said Coach Dave Gregson, "but we recognize the sacrifices they have made in giving us half their career in NCAA Provisional status."
Richard Dearle served as the goalkeeper for the Blue and Gold, totaling three saves on the night.
Emmanuel was first to take the lead in the 18
th minute with a shot from inside the box that was just out of Dearle's reach.
The Eagles were unable to find a promising opportunity to retaliate, and the half ended with Embry-Riddle down 1-0.
The Eagles came back looking for a goal in the second half, but remained unsuccessful. Their best opportunity came in the 46
th minute when
Knutur Bjornsson shot between two Lion defenders, but his shot hit the inside of the post and deflected away.
The Eagles received two red cards and played the final 30 minutes down one player and one coach. The Lions took advantage of playing a man up and scored in the 74
th minute, bringing the score to 2-0.
The Eagles had one more scoring opportunity in the 86
th minute with a shot by
Joao Belmonte, but his shot rolled just wide and the game ended in a 2-0 final.
"These past two years have been a good learning experience for us." Gregson continued, "We are excited to move forward into meaningful competition next year and are eager to implement all the necessary adjustments on and off the field that are clearly needed."
