PENSACOLA, Fla. - In their first matchup since 1995, the Embry-Riddle Eagles downed the West Florida Argonauts, 4-1 on Tuesday night. The Eagles (16-8) got a huge pitching performance from
Kenny Burkhead as the right-hander tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits against the 29th-ranked Argonauts (14-9) in the two teams' first-ever meeting at Jim Spooner Field.
Tobias Moreno sliced a double down the left field line to start the game off, scoring on an error by the UWF first baseman as
Kyle Zirbes reached safely, giving ERAU a 1-0 lead. After an infield single from
Joshua Garcia put runners on the corners against Argonaut starter Troy Brown, the Eagles got another run off a
Jonathan Camp groundout before
Liam Goodall collected his 28th career double to plate Garcia for a 3-0 Eagle lead.
Nic Strasser, the first batter of the night for UWF, worked a full count against Burkhead before homering to left to trim the Eagle lead to 3-1. However, that would be the only run the Argos would manage against Burkhead and later
Joey Swinarski as the pair left seven Argos on base and induced three double plays en route to the victory.
Burkhead and his counterpart Brown moved quickly through the second and third innings and Burkhead got the first of ERAU's three double plays in the fourth to keep the visitors in front by a couple of runs.
In the bottom of the fifth the Argos threatened, getting back-to-back singles to start the frame before a failed sacrifice bunt attempt was popped up for an out, followed by Strasser grounding into a 5-3 double play, turned nicely by Zirbes and
Matt Jacobs.
Zach Howard gave the Eagles some breathing room in the seventh, taking the first pitch of the inning out of the ballpark for his first collegiate home run, pushing the ERAU lead to 4-1, and that was more than enough for Burkhead and Swinarski the rest of the way.
Swinarksi came in for Burkhead with two men on and one out in the eighth, working a full count against John Price before the third and final twin killing was turned by the Blue and Gold to escape the jam and send the game to the ninth.
Swinarksi worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to record his first save of 2016, wrapping up the Eagles' 16th win of the year.
Burkhead (4-1) threw 99 pitches to get through 7.2 innings and earn his fourth win of the year. Seven different Eagles recorded a hit, while Camp, Goodall and Howard each had an RBI for Embry-Riddle.
Goodall also tied the program record for career at-bats with his 754th in the ninth, tying Bryan Carter (1997-00).
The Eagles and Argonauts will conclude their two-game series tomorrow, Wednesday, March 16 with a 3 p.m. (CT) contest.
