DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 12th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins made their debut appearance at Sliwa Stadium a good one on Friday night, downing Embry-Riddle, 10-5 for their eighth win in a row. The Eagles (17-9) totalled 13 hits, but stranded 11 runners, while the Mocs (16-6) improved to 5-3 all-time against the Eagles, including a 3-0 mark in Daytona Beach.
It was the home team that actually scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second when
Matt Jacobs singled home
Jonathan Camp, but the lead didn't last long as Logan Browning homered to center, plating two runs for a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. FSC would add another run in the frame on a ground out for a 3-1 cushion before plating lone runs in the fifth and sixth to increase its lead to 6-1.
Camp connected on his sixth homer of the season in the last of the sixth, trimming the deficit to 6-2, but the Moccasins answered with four runs in the eighth to push the advantage to 10-2 as the Eagles used three pitchers in the inning.
The Eagles showed some signs of life in their half of the frame, starting with a
Liam Goodall walk and
Enderson Velasquez single, scoring Goodal from second after a wild pitch moved him into scoring position. A Jacobs walked, followed by an infield single from
Cody Bogart made it 10-4 before
Tobias Moreno accounted for the fifth run of the night for the Eagles on a single through the left side, scoring Jacobs. The Eagle threat was neutralized when Mitch McCarthy came in with two on and one out, striking out
Kyle Zirbes and
Joshua Garcia back-to-back to keep the lead at five runs.
The Blue and Gold again threatened in the ninth thanks to a Camp leadoff double, but after a fly out for the first out, Velasquez walked and tried to advance to second on a fly ball from Jacobs, getting cut down at second for a game-ending double play.
Ben Richardson (6-1) got the win for the Mocs, going 6.1 innings, scattering nine hits with six Ks, while
Nick Dearing (3-3) took the loss for the Eagles, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with fours strikeouts.
The Eagles threw eight wild pitches and issued six base on balls to the Mocs while also hitting two batters.
Camp, Goodall, Velasquez and Jacobs all had two hits for the Eagles, while Bogart finished 3-for-4 at3 the plate.
ERAU and FSC will be back in action, weather permitting, tomorrow, Saturday, March 19 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
