DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 12 Florida Southern Moccasins struck for 15 runs on 20 hits on their way to a 15-9 win over Embry-Riddle on Sunday afternoon. The Mocs' (17-7) 20 hits were the most-ever given up by the Blue and Gold, tying York (Feb. 28, 2011) and St. Thomas (May 9, 2007). The Eagles (18-10) dropped the series to FSC, two games to one, despite scoring 26 runs and recording 42 hits in the three contests.
The Mocs scored a pair of runs in the first inning, loading the bases with no outs against ERAU's
Kenny Burkhead. A line out and slow grounder looked like it may get the Eagles out of the jam, but the Eagles couldn't quite turn the double play as a run scored before the fourth hit of the inning drove in another for a 2-0 FSC lead.
ERAU answered right back in the bottom of the first for a run and both Burkhead and Florida Southern's Logan Browning kept their opponents off the scoreboard in the second and third.
The Moccasins chased Burkhead from the game in the fourth, stringing together four hits to take a 5-1 lead.
Troy Naab came in for Burkead, getting the final two outs of the inning with a sixth run scoring for the Mocs.
Matt Jacobs started the last of the fourth with a solo homer, but that's all the Eagles could get off of Browning as he kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth.
The visitors broke things open in their half of the sixth as ERAU used three pitchers to get out of the inning with FSC plating three runs to go up 9-2.
FSC added a run in the seventh to reach double-digit runs for the second time in the weekend, but
Liam Goodall got the run right back with his first homer of the season in the last of the seventh, trimming the lead to 10-3.
A solo long ball in the Florida Southern eighth came before the Eagles scored twice in their part of the frame, one on a
Kyle Zirbes RBI single and another came on a
Tobias Moreno RBI single.
Leading 11-5 going into the ninth, the Moccasins put the game out of reach with four runs against three Eagle pitchers, pushing their advantage to 15-5.
A slew of pinch hitters for the Eagles were able to get four runs of their own in the ninth as
Gunnar Bradshaw recorded his first collegiate hit, scoring on a
Mitchel Lindheim double.
Joey Swinarski brought in two more runs on a double to right center before the final Eagle run of the day scored on a wild pitch.
In total, the Eagles used seven pitchers in the loss as Burkhead (4-2) took the loss in 3.1 innings.
Goodall went 4-for-5 for the Blue and Gold, while Moreno finished 2-for-6. Seven other Eagles recorded a hit.
Embry-Riddle will host defending NCAA II National Champion Tampa for a three-game series later this week, starting with a single game on Thursday, March 24 at 6 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m.
