@ERAUBaseball Pulls Away Late in 9-1 Win Over Assumption

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team turned a 1-0 lead after four innings into a 9-1 victory over Assumption on Tuesday evening at Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles (14-6) scored eight runs over their last four at-bats while a trio of Blue and Gold pitchers held the Greyhounds (1-7) to just one run on six hits to complete the Eagles' six-game homestand at 5-1.

Embry-Riddle got big games at the dish from Enderson Velasquez and Tobias Moreno while fellow senior Dylan Demarest picked up his first win of 2016 on the mound in the longest outing of his career.

Demarest faced the minimum in the first inning, and Moreno started things off for the Eagles offensively in the bottom of the frame with a double to left, moving to third on a Kyle Zirbes' groundout before scoring on Joshua Garcia's sacrifice fly.

The 1-0 ERAU lead would stand for the first four innings as Demarest and his counterpart Mike Curtis matched zeroes until the Eagles broke through in the fifth, extending their lead to 3-0 on four consecutive base hits, starting with Moreno and Zirbes' tripling to right in back-to-back plate appearances before Garcia singled to third on a perfectly placed bunt and Jonathan Camp singled to left center.

Demarest cruised through the Greyhound sixth and Velasquez waited just two pitches into the home-half of the sixth to rip a leadoff solo homer down the left field line, his first of the season, as ERAU enjoyed a 4-0 advantage.

The Greyhounds finally reached the scoreboard in the seventh when Kevin Quinlivan homered to center, cutting the Eagle deficit to 4-1, and Assumption continued to threaten in the frame, chasing Demarest with a single and walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. Kenny Burkhead came in for the Blue and Gold, getting a ground out, pop out and fly out to strand the runners and keep the Eagle lead at three runs.

Embry-Riddle answered the lone AC run in the seventh with three of its own, benefiting from two Greyhound errors in the frame as Velasquez recorded a two-RBI single before scoring himself on a Dalton Hughes sacrifice fly for a 7-1 Eagle cushion.

The home side put the game out of reach in the eighth with two more runs, the first coming on a failed pick off attempt and the second on a Liam Goodall RBI groundout.

Dominic Jeancola relieved Burkhead to start the ninth, working a three-up, three-down inning to secure the 9-1 win.

Demarest (1-0) went six innings, scattering six hits while allowing one run with five strikeouts before Burkhead and Jeancola tossed the final three innings without giving up a hit.

Velasquez finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, recording his 100th ERAU hit in the contest. Moreno was 3-for-5 with two runs, finishing just a homer short of the cycle, while Zirbes, Garcia and Camp each had a pair of hits for the Blue and Gold.

The Eagles travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry on Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12. First pitch for Friday's single game is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Saturday's twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
