DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle bounced back from a series-opening loss on Friday night to take both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Florida Tech, claiming the weekend series, two games to one. The Eagles (27-15) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back en route to the 10-4 win in the first game on Saturday before going up 6-1 in the second game and holding on for a 6-3 final over the Panthers (24-17).
The Eagles will trek to St. Augustine on Tuesday, April 19 to take on Flagler for a 6 p.m. first pitch against the Saints.
Game 1 - ERAU 10, FIT 4
Jonathan Camp set the tone of the day with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and
Kenny Burkhead delivered his second straight strong start as the Eagles cruised to a 10-4 win in the opener.
Burkhead worked around a leadoff double in the top of the first, and ERAU jumped on FIT starter Tyler Deel when Camp launched his team-leading eighth home run of the season down the left field line, bringing in
Liam Goodall and
Enderson Velasquez after the pair each drew walks, giving ERAU a 3-0 advantage.
Burkhead delivered a shut down inning in the second and the Blue and Gold doubled its lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs on two hits and a crucial FIT error. Goodall, Camp and
Joshua Garcia each recorded RBIs in the inning as Embry-Riddle went up 6-0, chasing Deel from the contest.
The Eagles added to their lead in the fourth when Velasquez doubled home Goodall after Goodall drew a walk, marking the 15th straight plate appearance reaching base, a streak that would, if the Eagles were eligible to set records, match a NCAA II mark.
Burkhead continued to keep the Florida Tech offense off the scoreboard, and the ERAU lead increased to 8-0 when Velasquez scored on a ground out in the sixth.
FIT finally scored in the seventh, but the damage was kept at one run, and the Eagles quickly answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to expand the cushion to 10-1, both runs scoring on a Goodall double to left center.
Burkhead was relieved by
Dominic Jeancola in the middle of the eighth and Jeancola,
Kyle Miller and
Joey Gerber combined to get the final five outs of the game to secure the win for the Eagles.
Burkhead (6-2) went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Camp finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Goodall had two hits with three RBIs and three runs scored. Garcia,
Zach Howard and
Dalton Hughes each had two hits for the Blue and Gold.
Game 2 - ERAU 6, FIT 3
Embry-Riddle scored in the first inning for the second time in the day, and despite Florida Tech tying things up briefly in the fourth, the Eagles jumped back in front and never relinquished the advantage en route to the 6-3 series-clinching win.
Tobias Moreno started the bottom of the first with a triple, scoring on Goodall's single up the middle, and the 1-0 lead stood up for Eagle starter
Dylan Demarest until the fourth when FIT managed to push across the tying run.
Embry-Riddle tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good, the first coming on Garcia's sacrifice fly, scoring Camp after he doubled to start the inning and advanced on a wild pitch.
Kyle Zirbes manufactured a run for the Eagles, reaching on a hit by pitch, stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on another wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.
Demarest stranded runners and first and second in the fifth, and ERAU grew its lead to 6-1 in the sixth as Jacobs doubled,
Joey Swinarski tripled and Hughes put down a sacrifice bunt to bring in the final Eagle run of the day.
The Panthers made things interesting in the seventh when they loaded the bases against Demarest, bringing Gerber out of the bullpen with two outs. A single and walk pushed across two runs, but Gerber got a fly ball to center to end the inning, and keep the Eagles in front, 6-3.
Swinarski pitched the final two innings for the Eagles, facing the minimum, securing his third save of the season in the process.
Demarest (4-2) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three Ks. Moreno was 3-for-5 in the game while Goodall finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
