DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In 2015, the contest between the Embry-Riddle and Rollins women's soccer teams needed two overtime periods to determine the outcome. In 2016, with Embry-Riddle ranked 20
th and Rollins ranked eighth in the NCAA II poll, extra time was needed again in the match-up between the two schools. The Eagles were able to avenge last season's loss to the Tars as
Sophie Brundin's header in the 107
th minute lifted ERAU to a 1-0 win, Wednesday at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
In a battle between two ranked, unbeaten teams, the Eagles were able to maintain their unblemished record, improving to 4-0 on the year, while the Tars move to 4-1.
"I am extremely proud of our players tonight," ERAU Head Coach Samanth Bohon said. "We faced adversity before the game that could have given them excuses to give in and not fight as hard as they did. We talked a lot about being gritty and blue-collar tonight as we knew Rollins would give us a fight. They're a talented, quick side that Alicia [Schuk] always has well-organized. We needed some players to step up and play big minutes tonight and they did."
Rollins bested the Eagles offensively in the first half, outshooting the Eagles 7-3 and holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. That trend continued in second half as the Tars continued to pressure the Eagle defense and outshot the Eagles 6-0 in the first 20 minutes.
However, the Eagles stood up to the challenge and gained a slight advantage when Tamara Vukovich picked up her second yellow card in the 74
th minute, forcing the Tars to play shorthanded for the remainder of the contest.
The game opened up slightly for ERAU who tested Rollins goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell late in the game, but both Rowswell and her ERAU counterpart
Fanny Kristiansson came up with big saves to keep their respective foes off the scoreboard, sending the game into extra time.
In the closing seconds of the first overtime period, the Tars were fouled on the right side of the field and the free kick made its way to the six-yard box. Kristiansson got a touch on the ball, but was unable to hold onto it and in the scrum that ensued, the Eagle defense was able to save the ball off the line twice to keep the Tars off the board.
In the 107
th minute, the Eagles won their fourth corner kick of the night. Freshman substitute
Elizabeth Allen lifted the ball into the box and Brundin's header made its way past Rowswell into the right side of the goal to give the Eagles the win.
Next for the Eagles is a road match against Barry at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Miami Shores.
