DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry Riddle men's soccer team shut out the Sharks of Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. The Eagles scored two goals in the first 11 minutes. The Blue and Gold bring its overall record to 2-3-1 while the Sharks fall to 2-5.
Joao Belmonte and
Felix Moller each had one goal on the night, with Moller tallying his third goal of the season.
"We were at it right from the start," Head Coach Dave Gregson said, "With great effort, concentration and endeavor."
Richard Dearle only faced two shots both of which he saved, registering his first shut out.
Belmonte scored the first goal for the Eagles in the seventh minute after he intercepted a back pass in the box and maneuvered around the goalkeeper to put the ball into the open net.
Shortly after, in the 11
th minute, Moller received a pass at the top of the box from
Daniel Gylfason and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to bring the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
It was not until the second half that the Sharks had an opportunity to score, with a shot by Jose Giron that was kick saved by Dearle, rebounding back to Bestun Mohammed who sent a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, rebounded again by Juanes Devia who took a shot that went wide.
Both goalkeepers kept the opposing offenses off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, as the Eagles held on for a 2-0 victory.
"To get a positive result and a positive performance is a good step in the right direction for the group," Gregson said. "Now we have to recover and get ready to go again in 72 hours," Gregson continued. "We're looking forward to another tough test against Eckerd later on this week."
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, September 24 against Eckerd in St. Petersburg at 7 p.m.
