DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A goal in each half sealed a 2-0 win for the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team over Armstrong State, Monday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. Two was the magic number for the Eagles on Monday as their two goals helped them to a 2-0 record on the year and a 2-0 record all-time against the Pirates.
The Eagles took the first three shots of the contest, forcing goalkeeper Erica Laurens and the ASU defense to come up with key stops. The Pirates responded with a pair of shots of their own that tested ERAU freshman netminder
Fanny Kristiansson, and from that point both sides battled for possession and a chance to find the back of the net.
A turnover in the midfield led to the Eagles' first goal.
Maria Schmiedhofer picked up the ball following an ASU miscue, turned and completed a pass to Elvira Ramel. Schmiedhofer continued her run down the field and was rewarded with a return pass from Ramel at the edge of the box. Schmiedhofer spun and dribbled through three defenders before slotting a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. The freshman's first goal of the year gave the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead with 13 minutes left in the half.
Armstrong made several substitutions in an effort to get something going, but the remainder of the half yielded just one shot, which was off the boot of ERAU's
Andrea Froshaug, and the Eagles took their one-goal advantage into the halftime break.
The Pirates stepped up their offensive pressure to start the second period rattling off five shots and four corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the half. The Eagles withstood the barrage and began to pressure the ASU defense once again, allowing the Pirates just one shot and one corner kick over the next 26 minutes.
In the 79
th minute, Froshaug outpaced the Pirates' back line and raced into the box where she was pulled down by an ASU defender who was ejected for the foul. Guro Naess Berge converted the resulting penalty kick to extend the Eagle lead to 2-0 and swing the momentum firmly in the Eagles' favor.
Over the final 11 minutes, the ball spent the majority of the time in the Armstrong State half of the field as the Blue and Gold wrapped up its second win of the season.
Kristiansson was solid between the pipes for the Blue and Gold, hauling in four saves in 90 minutes of work. Her ASU counterpart, Laurens, also went the distance pulling in five saves for the Pirates who fall to 0-1 on the year.
"We had flashes of good things but really didn't play our style of soccer like we wanted to," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "I was extremely disappointed in our second half as we came out flat and didn't really lift our level. We did just enough and that's not how we're going to improve. Armstrong State is a proven team every year and they'll have a great season with the depth and experience they have. While we're obviously happy to get a result, we need to execute much better and keep asking more from ourselves in order to become a special team this year."
Coming up this weekend, the Eagles will host the fifth edition of the Habitat for Humanity Invitational. The three-day event will include a free youth clinic from 6 -7:30 p.m. on Friday, a workday with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, and the Eagles taking on Georgia Gwinnett at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
