ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team battled hard against Flagler College, but ended the game in a 2-2 draw at Saints Field on Wednesday. The Eagles and Saints both bring their records to 0-2-1 for the season.
Eagle goalkeeper
Richard Dearle recorded 15 saves in 110 minutes of play, the second-most all-time in a single game, while
Moriba Ballah and
Knutur Bjornsson each scored one goal and registered one assist.
Early in the first half the Saints played a strong defense keeping the ball on the Eagles' end of the field. The Saints outshot Embry-Riddle with 9-2 shots on goal in the first half, opening up many scoring opportunities but goalkeeper Dearle was spot on in defending the ERAU goal.
The Eagles regained control of the ball midway through the first half. Their efforts paid off after Ballah accepted a pass from Bjornsson across the face of goal and put the ball into the back of the net to score the first goal of the game in the 33
rd minute.
Shortly after, in the 36
th minute, the Saints answered with a goal of their own to tie the game.
In the first minute of the second half the Eagles regained the lead as Bjornsson took a pass from Ballah at midfield and dribbled into the box past Flagler defenders and went one-on-one with Flagler goalkeeper, Lex Craggs. Bjornsson managed to slide the ball past Craggs and it deflected off the pole and into the corner of the net bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of Embry-Riddle.
In the 59
th minute of the game, the Saints snuck a header shot past Dearle to tie the game 2-2. The remainder of regulation yielded few shots by either team as both teams played a solid defense.
The game was forced into two overtime periods in which both teams became very chippy, resulting in four yellow cards given to the Eagles and three given to the Saints. The Eagles also received a red card in the second overtime period but were able to hold off the Saints shorthanded. Overtime expired with neither team having the chance to score, thus resulting in a 2-2 tie.
The Eagles take the field Saturday September 10 in their fourth road match against Francis Marion in Florence, South Carolina at 7 p.m.
