HOOVER, Ala. – The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball team opened play at the South Regional Volleyball Crossover tournament with a 3-0 sweep of West Georgia, Friday at the Finley Center. The Eagles improved to 5-7 with the win, while UWG fell to 2-16 on the year.
Theresa Jordan led all players with a season-high 14 kills to go with four blocks, four digs and a .333 hitting percentage.
Melanie Canfield contributed 12 kills and nine digs, while
Ella Duggan hit .455 with five kills and posted a match-best six blocks.
Paola Virella had eight kills and a match-high 14 digs, while
Alyssa Rudd led all players with 39 assists.
Embry-Riddle scored the first three points of the match to take a 3-0 lead, but the Wolves battled back to tie the set 10-10. Midway through the set the Eagles used a 4-1 spurt to grab a five-point (18-13) advantage and that five-point margin held as the Blue and Gold took the first set 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair with neither side leading by more than two through the first 36 points. After a West Georgia attack error gave the Eagles an 18-17 edge, the Eagles rattled off five unanswered points behind the Rudd's serve and closed out the set on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Errors plagued the Eagles in the third set as 10 of their 16 miscues came in that frame. ERAU moved ahead 18-15 but a pair of errors helped the Wolves overtake the Eagles for a 20-19 lead. The Eagles came back to tie the score at 21-21 but two more miscues helped UWG to a 24-21 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Duggan and Jordan, as well as a pair of service aces by
Olivia Roa erased the deficit and put the Eagles back in front 25-24. Another pair of Eagle errors helped the Wolves even things up at 26-26, but ERAU got a kill from Virella and a big block from Jordan and
McKenna James to pull out the victory and complete the sweep.
The Eagles wrap up tournament play with a pair of matches on Saturday, taking on Montavello at 11 a.m. and Mississippi College at 5:45 p.m.
