FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team finished the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-2, double-overtime decision to Nova Southeastern after seeing the Sharks score the equalizer just moments before the end of regulation and the game-winner five minutes into the second overtime period. The Eagles wrap up the year at 2-9-2 overall and 1-8-1 in Sunshine State Conference play. NSU improved to 8-7 and 5-5, respectively.
The Eagles and Sharks were evenly matched throughout the contest, with the Sharks holding a slim, 15-12 lead in shots (7-4 advantage in shots on frame).Â
Will Hanisch got his first career start in goal for the Blue and Gold, making four saves on the day, but NSU struck first when Bestun Mohammed beat Hanisch in the 14th minute for a 1-0 NSU lead.
The Eagles were able to end the first half strong, starting with an equalizing goal from
Daniel Gylfason in the 35th minute thanks to a pass from
Collin Archer. ERAUÂ kept the pressure up and after a Shark foul in the box,
Teddy West buried the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-1 Eagle lead just before the break. It marked the first time during the 2017 regular season the Eagles scored multiple goals in a contest.
The Eagle defense was stalwart in the second half, turning aside shot after shot from the Sharks as the Eagle offense continued to try and stretch the lead on the other end. The hosts earned a corner kick at the 87:43 mark, leading to the tying goal off the head of Stefan Faistenauer with just two minutes and change left in regulation.
Neither team was able to find the winner in the first OT, but Nova Southeastern did find the golden goal in the fifth minute of the second overtime, sending the Eagles to their third extra-time loss of the season.
