Spartans Explode from Deep to Defeat @ERAUMBasketball 98-82

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Entering Saturday's game, the Tampa Spartans had averaged six made three-point field goals per game, the fewest in the Sunshine State Conference, but it was a different story in the ICI Center as UT connected on 16 three's, led by Anthony Gamble's eight triples and season-high 29 points to beat Embry-Riddle, 98-82. The Eagles (6-7, 0-5) got to within four with six minutes to play, but Tampa (6-6, 2-4) ended the game on a 23-11 run to beat the Eagles.

ERAU trailed by nine at the half, 46-37, and was down by as many as 13 early in the second half, but after a Gamble three to make it 64-51 at the 13:43 mark, the home team went on a 20-11 run, capped by a Joshua Hawkins tip-in at the 6:19 mark, trimming the Spartan lead to 75-71. The Eagles appeared to force Tampa into an over-and-back violation on the ensuing UT possession, but it went uncalled and the Spartans got an offensive rebound off a missed trey before Gamble made a running layup and was fouled, completing the three-point play to push the lead back to seven.

Embry-Riddle turned the ball over four times and went 0-for-3 from the field and just 1-for-4 at the free throw line over the next three minutes as Tampa extended its lead up to 13 on a Marcel Robinson free throw with just over three minutes to play. Hawkins made a layup to stop the run, but it proved to be too little, too late as Tampa kept pulling away, resulting in the 16-point win for UT.

Tampa built its nine-point halftime lead thanks to 10 triples in the opening period, five coming from Gamble (who made just eight total three's entering the game). UT shot 63 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from three in the first half, holding the Eagles to just 40 percent from the floor and 4-of-14 from long range. Nashad Mackey reached the 1,000-point plateau in his collegiate career in the first half, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the opening half, joined by Luka Majstorovic (11) in double-figures to lead the way for the Eagles.

Ognjen Miljkovic finished with 24 points (16 in the second half) and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while Mackey went for 16 points and 11 boards (his ninth double-double - second-most in NCAA II) and Rudy Bibb-Boyd recorded 16 points for ERAU. Majstorovic was the fourth Eagle in double-figures for the night, finishing with 17 points and five rebounds.

The Eagles will travel to Boca Raton on Jan. 3 to take on Lynn at 7:30 p.m.
