LAKELAND, Fla. - The final 10 minutes were not kind to the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team in Wednesday's 112-98 loss at Florida Southern. The Eagles (4-5, 0-4) led 76-75 with 11 minutes left to play, but the Mocs (5-4, 2-3) ended the game on a 37-23 run to send the Eagles to their second straight loss, third consecutive on the road.
The home team scored 61 second-half points to turn a four-point ERAU lead into, at one point, an 18-point deficit for the Eagles late in the second half. Despite three players scoring more than 20 points, the Eagles couldn't answer the Mocs' second half run after
Rudy Bibb-Boyd nailed a triple at the 11:25 mark to give the Eagles the 75-74 lead. Brett Hanson answered quickly on the other end for FSC and the hosts held the Eagles scoreless from the floor over the next three minutes, the only points coming from a pair of
Nashad Mackey free throws as FSC went up 84-77. Mackey hit a triple for Embry-Riddle to trim the Moc lead to four, but two straight turnovers by the Eagles directly led to breakaway dunks for Florida Southern.
A string of technical fouls on the Eagles around the seven-minute mark resulted in an extended free throw line trip for FSC, and the Mocs began to pull away, stretching their lead to 97-82 on a Ja'Kwon Jones layup with just over six minutes to play. The Eagles couldn't mount a comeback over the final five minutes as the Moccasins took the result, 112-98.
The game started all Florida Southern as the home team raced out to a 12-5 lead on a Tyler Ross three-pointer, ultimately going up 21-7 at the 15:44 mark of the first half. The Eagles went on a 13-3 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Bibb-Boyd jumper to trim the deficit to 24-20.
Both teams played evenly over the next few minutes, but the final seven minutes of the first belonged to the visitors as ERAU, trailing 35-30, went on a 15-0 run to turn a five-point deficit into a 10-point lead.
Ognjen Miljkovic was instrumental in the run and it appeared as if the Eagles would take all the momentum into the break with a 55-47 lead, but Jonathan Lawton hit a triple and was fouled with just seconds left before halftime, cutting the Eagle lead to 55-51 at the half.
Miljkovic had a season-high 26 points to lead the way for ERAU while Mackey went for 23 points and an ERAUÂ NCAA-era high 18 rebounds. Bibb-Boyd finished with 22 points for the Blue and Gold who shot 54 percent for the game, including 11-for-18 from deep.
Embry-Riddle will have more than a week off before hosting Florida National on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.
