MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team continued its trend of late-inning rallies on Friday night, taking a four-run deficit down to one, but Georgia College was able to hold off the Eagles for a 6-5 win in the series opener. For the second time in as many nights, the Eagles (3-5) out-hit their opponents 10-6, but the Bobcats (5-2) got two unearned runs in addition to four earned runs against ERAU starter
Austin Lee en route to the win.
After Lee and GC starter Charlie Hecht traded scoreless first innings, the Eagles struck first with a two-run second.
Luis Olivier and
Zach Howard recorded back-to-back singles before
Christopher Medina bunted them up a base for
Jake Durant who singled both runners in for a 2-0 lead.
A trio of Eagle errors in the home half of the second resulted in two Bobcat runs crossing home, tying the game before Lee and Hecht again traded scoreless frames in the third.
The Bobcats took the lead in the fourth when they got to Lee for three runs on four hits, but Lee was able to end the inning with a strikeout.
ERAU threatened in the fifth when Durant and
Kyle Guttveg both singled before
Robbie Hanlon reached on a GC error to load the bases, but Hecht got
Jonathan Camp to ground out to short to keep the Eagles from scoring.
The hosts added an insurance run in the sixth for a 6-2 advantage, but the Eagles found some offense of their own in the seventh. After a one-out Durant single,
A.J. Mazzurco pinch hit and doubled to right center, scoring Durant before moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Guttveg sac fly to left. Hanlon followed with a single, chasing Hecht from the game and Camp greeted the new GC pitcher with a double to the wall, plating Hanlon and making it a one-run game. Olivier flew out to the warning track on the next pitch, just missing a go-ahead round-tripper.
Lee faced the minimum in the seventh, but the Eagles couldn't get on base in the eighth and
Kyle Lugar relieved Lee to start the last of the frame, going 1-2-3 to send the game to the ninth.
Mazzurco worked a one-out walk in the final inning, but a 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Guttveg ended the contest in favor of the Bobcats.
Lee (0-1) got the loss in seven innings of work, allowing four earned runs on six hits with four Ks. Durant went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Olivier finished 2-for-3 and Guttveg, Camp and Mazzurco each registered an RBI.
The Eagles and Bobcats square off on Saturday for a 2 p.m. first pitch at John Kurtz Field.
