FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team defeated the Sharks of Nova Southeastern 6-0 on Friday in the first game of the three-game series. The Eagles' record improves to 4-5 while the Sharks fall to 1-7.
Kassidy Simons set the tone for the game with a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the first inning, giving the Eagles a 2-0 head start.
The Eagles held their lead through the second inning and scored three additional runs in the third. With the bases loaded and only one out,
Eryn Chester scored on an error by the catcher, Scott scored on a wild pitch and Morales, pinch running for Simons, scored on a
Kendall Funk RBI groundout to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
The Blue and Gold put runners in scoring position but could not push any more runs through until the seventh inning when
Hannah Thomas scored on a base hit by
Gabriella Obia, bringing the score to 6-0.
The Embry-Riddle defense preserved the shutout to end the game in a 6-0 victory.
Scott went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two stolen bases while Simons went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
Ilona Andringa (3-2) tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win, allowing only four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
The Eagles return to the Ad Griffin Sports Complex in Fort Lauderdale to face the Sharks again in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
