GULF SHORES, Ala. – A goal in the 104th minute was all the Eagles needed to come away from the Foley Sports Tourism Complex with a win against Lee on Sunday.
Maria Schmiedhofer provided the finish that gave the Eagles (2-1) their second win of the season.
The Eagles were more dangerous on offense to start the game, as a strike by Julia Olsen from the right and a long-range blast from Guro Naess Berge from just outside the center circle, forced Lee goalkeeper Haley Gribler to come up with two big saves.
The team's fortunes were reversed in the second half as the Flames held a 7-1 shot advantage over the Blue and Gold, who played against the wind in that frame. Lee looked to their bench for a spark, but they were unable to capitalize on the shot advantage, sending the game into overtime.
At the 94:14 mark, Olsen rifled a shot from about 25 yards out, but her attempt sailed just over the cross bar. Lee's only shot of the first overtime period was saved by
Dana Ruchti, extending the scoreless deadlock and resulting in an additional 10 minutes of play.
With 6:32 left in the second overtime period, the Eagles won the ball in the midfield and played it forward to
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir in the center of the pitch. Gardarsdottir found
Annie Gelnaw running into the box from the right side and Gelnaw hit a low ball toward the goal, which Schmiedhofer deflected past Gribler into the far side netting to secure the victory for the Blue and Gold.
Ruchti, who enter the game in the 48th minute, picked up her first win of the year, finishing with three saves in the Eagles' second shutout of the season. Gribler also had three saves for the Flames who move to 2-2 with the loss.
"I am so incredibly proud of this group, regardless of the result," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon state. "We've had tremendous adversity this season not the least of which was having to evacuate Daytona Beach on Friday. This team showed incredible character and grit to find a way to beat a talented Lee group today. It's been really hard to focus on the game with everything going on at home with Hurricane Irma, so I give this team a lot of credit for their focus and resiliency today. Everyone played a role in this win and it feels really good. Now, we will be praying for Florida and our area as we wait and see the impact of Hurricane Irma."
The Eagles are scheduled to open Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday when they travel to St. Leo to take on defending league champion Saint Leo at 7 p.m.
