BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the second straight game, the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team was unable to get its offense going, resulting in a 72-52 loss to Lynn on the road on Wednesday. The Eagles (9-4, 3-3) were within a point of the Fighting Knights (6-7, 2-4) at the half, but the home team shot 50 percent from the field in the second 20 minutes of play to hand the Blue and Gold its second straight loss in Sunshine State Conference play.
Tara Fields scored the Eagles' first points of the game less than 30 seconds into the contest, but the Eagles were cold from the field over the next four minutes, allowing Lynn to surge ahead 8-2. ERAU managed to get back on track and a
Morgan Ackermann three pulled the Eagles within two (16-14) with 2:34 left in the half, but the Fighting Knights scored four unanswered points to lead 20-14 at the end of the period.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the second to cut the Lynn lead to two (20-18). The Fighting Knights enjoyed a run of their own and built the lead back up to six points (28-22) with 3:55 left in the half.
On the Eagles' next trip down the floor, Ackermann buried her second long-range shot of the night to make it a three-point game.
Lauren Ellenberger forced Mariah Penascino to cough up the ball on Lynn's next possession and after a Nikki Tucker jumper made it a one-point game, the freshman fed Ellenberger on the inside for a layup that gave the Eagles their first lead of the game (29-28).
ERAU still had a one-point lead in the closing seconds of the quarter, but Juju Uloma scored as the clock expired to give Lynn a 32-31 edge at the half.
The game remained close through the first four minutes of the third, but after a Fields free throw, the Eagle offense went cold. Lynn outscored ERAU 10-0 in the last five minutes of the quarter and what was a one-point lead at the half, ballooned to 12 (51-39) heading into the fourth.
While the Eagles were able to improve their shooting from 23.1 percent (3-of-13) in the third to 45.5 percent (5-of-11) in the fourth, they were unable to catch up to the Fighting Knights, who shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the field in the final frame en route to the 20-point win.
Ashley McWilliams played 38 minutes and scored a career-high 15 points to go with three boards and three steals. Ellenberger and Fields tallied nine points apiece, with Ellenberger pulling down a game-high eight rebounds to go with six assists and three steals.
The Eagles will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to St. Petersburg to face league-leading Eckerd at 2 p.m.
