ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team traveled to St. Augustine to face Flagler in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night.
Though it seemed like both teams were evenly matched in terms of possession, the Eagles (2-8-1, 2-6-1 SSC) were unable to convert on any of their chances at goal. Flagler (4-7-1, 2-1-1 PBC) scored its first goal in the first half and never looked back, eventually coming away with a 2-0 victory.
ERAU held a small advantage in possession to start the first half, but the Saints did a better job of controlling the ball in the latter part of the period. The Eagles had several opportunities to get on the board, but they were unable to take advantage of three corners and several free kicks in dangerous positions.
Teddy West nearly gave ERAU the lead 10 minutes into the match, but his attempt was saved. Flagler's Oscar Davidsson broke the scoreless tie 17 minutes into the game. Joaquin Gutierrez' cross into the box connected with Davidsson, who shot the ball first time and found the back of the net.
The Blue and Gold had several chances to tie the score before the break.
Ross Dickinson had a chance in the box after a free kick, but his shot sailed high. As time winded down in the half, ERAU was awarded with another free kick just outside the box.
Alex O'Brien's shot curled above the Flagler wall, but it would be saved by the keeper. The Saints would go into the half win a 1-0 lead.
It did not take long for Flagler to add to its lead. Henrique Salomao was able to beat two Eagle defenders and find the back of the net to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
ERAU had a chance to get the momentum back on its side in the 70th minute. The Eagles were awarded with a penalty kick after a foul in the box. West's shot was on goal, but the Flagler keeper dove to his right to make the save. Minutes later,
Afonso Martins had space to go at goal, but his strike would go wide.
Despite having several opportunities, the Eagles would be held scoreless for the rest of the match. Flagler outshot ERAU 11-8 in the match. West and O'Brien led the Eagle attack with two shots each.
Will Hanisch made three saves in goal for the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles' next fixture takes place on Saturday, when they face Rollins in a crucial Sunshine State Conference matchup. The game in Winter Park, Fla., will take place at 2 p.m.
